Men’s Hockey kicks season off with close loss to ranked St. Cloud
10/6/2024 10:29:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Huskies first period goal was the only tally in the tight season opener
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The 20th ranked St. Thomas Tommies (0-1-0 overall) battled the 16th ranked St. Cloud State Huskies (1-0-0 overall) in a tight 1-0 loss Sunday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Saint Thomas Ice Arena. It had been 364 days since the two teams' last matchup, a game that also ended with a 1-0 St. Cloud victory.
Jake Sibell stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced in his first career start against the Huskies of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
Recap
The puck dropped on the 2024-25 season at 5:07 p.m. and for the first time in program history the Tommies came into the game nationally ranked. St. Cloud State won the faceoff but it was the Tommies' Cooper Gay and Liam Malmquist who got off the year's first shots on goal. Husky goaltender, Isak Posch made each stop, something he would do 32 more times to will his team to victory.
The Tommies outshot the Huskies 61-43 and 34-28 on goal but nothing they did could best the opposing goaltender's form. The visiting Huskies scored the game's only goal five minutes and 38 seconds in after four players were penalized, two from each team, for roughing after the whistle. Caige Sterzer was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct after the fracas. He was sent back to the locker room just over five minutes into his Tommie debut.
The Husky goal came at even strength, 4-on-4, the Tommies killed off the remaining three minutes of Sterzer's penalty. The Toms finished the game 2-2 on the penalty kill but came up empty in all four of their opportunities on the power play.
St. Thomas won the face-off battle and shots-on-goal battle in each of the final two periods, but that first goal of the season evaded them the entire night.
