Tommies knock out a pair of two-goal deficits in tie with Vermont

10/12/2024 9:53:00 AM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies got goals from four different players in their highest scoring game since February 2024

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (0-1-1 overall) overcame a pair of two-goal deficits to Hockey East's Vermont Catamounts (0-0-1 overall) in a 5-5 tie that concluded with a Vermont "shootout win." The Toms scored three goals in the final period to complete the comeback and force overtime in front of a home crowd at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Lucas Wahlin, Mason Poolman (2), Luc Laylin, and Cooper Gay were the St. Thomas goal scorers. Jake Sibell made 32 saves on 37 shots in goal for the Tommies.

Recap
Friday's game against the Catamounts could not have been more different from the Tommies' season-opening 1-0 loss to St. Cloud State. One similarity was the Toms' slow start in the first period. They allowed two goals to Vermont's Colin Kessler who was making his collegiate debut. Kessler scored at 2:33 and 16:26 (PP) sandwiched around Lucas Wahlin's goal at 4:33. The captain's goal was the first of three times the Tommies would tie the game.

Kessler's first period power play goal was the only of the game for either side. The Tommies went 0-6 on the power play with two one-man advantages in each period while they killed 5-6 on the penalty kill, including a crucial 5-on-3 penalty early in the third period, and a 4-on-3 for 1:20 of OT.

The Catamounts picked up where they left off with a goal in the second from Jens Richards at 11:25 for a 3-1 lead. At 18:30 in the second, Simon Jellus of Vermont was called for a holding penalty to give the Tommies a chance on the power play late in the period. A chance that lasted just 29 seconds before Luc Laylin was sent to the box for slashing. While skating 4-on-4 the Tommies had sustained pressure in the offensive end and at 19:52 Chase Cheslock snapped a pass to Liam Malmquist, who in turned rifled a pass across the ice to Mason Poolman who one-timed the puck into a nearly wide-open net.

Cory Laylin is a fourth-year assistant coach on head coach Blasi's staff. He now has two sons on the team, Casy and Luc. The two teamed up on a breakout at 6:05 as Casy made a crisp pass to his brother, Luc, who unloaded the clip and screamed one by Vermont goaltender Keenan Rancier to tie the game at three. The Catamounts ruined the celebration, however, with a goal 47 seconds later and then another 36 seconds after that one to make it a 5-3 game.

The Toms outshot Vermont mightily in the final period and were rewarded for their efforts at 11:24 and 15:05 to tie the game at five. The first goal was Cooper Gay from just outside the crease after a Lucas Wahlin shot rebounded perfectly down onto his stick. The second was a beautiful shot from Poolman from the high slot through traffic and over the right shoulder of Rancier to force overtime
The Tommies limited the Catamounts to just one shot on goal in the five-minute overtime despite spending 1:20 of it down a man. They had five shots on goal of their own but could not find the game-winner.

The two teams moved on to the pointless (literally) non-conference shootout and the Catamounts scored on their second attempt.

Top Tommies
  • Mason Poolman scored two goals (including the game-tying fifth goal) for the first time in his short career. He scored just two goals all of last season in 28 games played. He also assisted on Wahlin's goal for the first three-point game of his career.
  • Liam Malmquist assisted on three Tommie goals (Wahlin's, Poolman's, and Gay's). It was the first three-assist game of his career (he had two two-assist games) and second three-point game of his career (earned three against BGSU last season).
  • Lucas Wahlin added a two-point game with a goal and an assist on Gay's goal. His 53 career points are the most in program history.
  • Wahlin scored the Tommies' first goal of the season. He joins Jake Braccini (2023-24), Carson Peters (2022-23), and Christiano Versich (2021-22) as first-goal scorers.
  • Luc Laylin's goal was the 20th of his career, assisting on the goal was Casy Laylin who recorded his first collegiate point.
  • Cooper Gay scored his 17th career goal and 30th point.
  • Matthew Gleason and Chase Cheslock each also earned an assist. Gleason won six of his nine faceoffs and was the only Tommie above .500 in the circle.
