Balanced effort lands St. Thomas perfect weekend, first program win over Kansas City

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A balanced effort helped St. Thomas volleyball secure its second straight sweep of the weekend, this time over Kansas City (25-17, 25-17, 25-22) in Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies improve to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the Summit League as it earned the program's first win every against Kansas City.

St. Thomas swept two of the reigning Summit League co-champions from a season ago following wins against South Dakota and Kansas City. The Tommies had a combined two set wins in 12 all-time matches against the two programs, combining for six this weekend.

Megan Wetter paced the offense attack with 11 kills on a .333 hitting percentage while Tezra Rudzitis followed with 10 kills and a team-best .400 attack percentage and Lauren Galvin added eight kills on a .389 hitting percentage. Ella Voegele led the Tommies with 18 digs, her 15th match leading the Tommies in the stat, Morgan Kealy paced the team with 32 assists, and Addie Schmotzer led the team with five blocks.

St. Thomas opened the first set with strong momentum, capitalizing on multiple errors from Kansas City to take an early 8-3 lead. Despite a mid-set rally by Kansas City, St. Thomas maintained control with blocks from Galvin, Schmotzer, and Ellie Gustafson. After a timeout with a 20-13 lead, St. Thomas sealed the set with efficient attacks, a service ace from Gustafson, and a trio block by Galvin, Kealy and Schmotzer for the final point of the set win.

In set two, St. Thomas maintained a steady attack, beginning with a strong kill by Rudzitis to open the set. UMKC held its first lead of the match following three straight points, but a kill from Gustafson sparked an 11-1 run for its final lead of the set, 13-6. The Tommie lead never went below four points for the remainder of the game as Rudzitis closed it out with her second and third kills of the set.

Following an opening point off a UMKC kill, a kill by Rudzitis and a Roos attack error gave St. Thomas its final lead of the match. Both teams faced three ties, the final coming at 10-10. A Kansas City service error helped St. Thomas to a 6-0 run, which included back-to-back blocks by Schmotzer with Galvin and Rudzitis also assisting on the blocks. The Tommies held off a late Roos push, who closed the gap to 24-22 late, as a St. Thomas timeout was followed by a UMKC service error to end the match.
