Three Tommies total double-digit kills, Kealy records double-double in four-set win
TULSA, Okla. -- Balance continues to be the theme for St. Thomas volleyball as it again excelled Thursday night following a four-set win over Oral Roberts (25-14, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18) in Tulsa, Okla. Three Tommies finished with double-digit kills while sophomore Morgan Kealy recorded her 10th double-double of the season.
The Tommies, who improve to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the Summit League, finished with a .264 hitting percentage compared to .143 for the Golden Eagles, who fall to 3-15 overall and 1-4 in the league. The Purple finished with eight team blocks, led by junior Megan Wetter with six and Kealy and junior Tezra Rudzitis with three each.
Rudzitis led the Tommies with 15 kills, her sixth match of the season with at least 15, while Wetter added 14 on a team high .478 hitting percentage, her sixth straight match hitting at least .300 from the floor. Kealy added 43 assists with 11 digs to push her career double-doubles to 18.
ORU took its first and only lead of the opening set with back-to-back points before St. Thomas pulled ahead with an 8-0 run, including two of Wetter's six kills in the game and two service aces from junior Allie Kopp. The Tommie lead was extended to double figures late in the set as the Golden Eagles finished with a .000 hitting percentage.
The lone Tommie loss of the night came in set two that featured 10 ties and four lead changes. Rudzitis began scoring for the Purple with her first of five kills in the set before adding another to tie the game at 2-2. The Golden Eagles' overcame a quick Tommie lead to pull ahead by three, its largest margin until the end of the set. Despite the Purple hitting .304 and tying the set at 17-17, ORU hit back-to-back kills and finished the set hitting .318 to win the game.
The first lead of the set went the Oral Roberts for the third time of the night but kills from sophomore Ellie Gustafson and Rudzitis helped spark a 6-1 run for St. Thomas. The Tommie lead dwindled until two Golden Eagle kills and a solo block gave ORU its second lead of the set, 13-12. A pair of errors from Oral Roberts allowed the Purple to take the final lead of the game, 18-17, before closing on a 4-0 run.
Redshirt freshman Addie Schmotzer notched a kill to begin the final set. Both teams traded leads four times, the final time as St. Thomas went on a 6-0 run for a 13-9 advantage.
