Galvin and Kealy record double-doubles in St. Thomas’ second Summit road loss
DENVER -- Senior Lauren Galvin tied a career high 22 kills along with 12 digs Saturday as St. Thomas volleyball fell in five sets at Denver (25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 17-25, 14-16). Galvin's 22 kills are the most for the program since Nov. 20, 2021 as the Tommies fall to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the Summit League.
St. Thomas scored four different ways to start the opening set for a 4-1 lead, which included a service ace from Allie Kopp, a block from Ellie Gustafson and Megan Wetter, and a kill by Tezra Rudzitis. The Pioneers answered with a 7-0 run and a four-point lead that was later extended to six, 15-9. Wetter put together four kills, placing a soft touch on multiple, while Lauren Galvin added two as part of the run to pull within one, 17-16. St. Thomas took the lead back with three straight points and used another three-point run for its final lead of the set, hitting .353 compared to .229 for Denver in the opening game.
The Tommies again went up first in set two before 11 ties and five lead changes, the final going to the Pioneers. Following a kill by Rudzitis and back-to-back service aces by Ella Voegele, Denver went on an 8-2 run and held off a late Tommie run to grab its first set win, 25-21.
A pair of DU attack errors, a kill by Wetter and an ace by Kopp put St. Thomas ahead, 4-1, in the third. Galvin's third kill of the set extended the lead to seven while she came back with back-to-back kills late to set up set point, 24-19. DU scored the next three points, but a service error handed the Purple the 25-22 set win.
Denver took the opening point for the first time in the match followed by back-to-back St. Thomas points, the only lead of the set for the Purple. DU scored six straight and extended its lead to a set high 10, 18-8. The Tommies hit just .033 in the set with seven attack errors and four service errors while the Pioneers hit .367 from the floor.
The Tommies created early momentum in the final set behind a kill from Addie Schmotzer and a block from Schmotzer and Libby Mattila for a 3-1 lead. Both teams traded points until a 6-1 run by the Tommies, led by three kills from Wetter and a block by Wetter and Morgan Kealy. Following two points from St. Thomas to extend the lead to 13-7, Denver scored eight of the final nine points to secure the comeback win.
