Colic scores twice as the Tommies earn first win over nationally ranked opponent in the DI era
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The St. Thomas Men's Soccer team traveled to Missouri for the second match up against the Roos this season. Scoring early in the game while maintaining offensive pressure and strong defending in the second half, St. Thomas (4-7-2, 1-4-0 Summit) defeated #22 Kansas City (8-3-3, 3-1-1 Summit) on Saturday evening.
RECAP
Settling into the Summit League match, St. Thomas posted a pair of shot attempts in the first 10 minutes of play at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
Continuing on the offensive attack, the Tommies were the first on the board as Faris Colic posted his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 19th minute of play.
Kansas City responded quickly, scoring the equalizer just eight minutes later. As both sides competed for the go-ahead goal, both defenses stood strong, sending the teams into halftime knotted at 1-1.
Coming out of break, St. Thomas would flip the script only needing three shots to take back the lead. With 20 minutes to play, Colic recorded his second of the night on a penalty kick.
St. Thomas remained poised to prevent an equalizer from Kansas City. Totaling six saves in the match, with two in the second half, Moritz Krenc held the Roos off the board the remainder of the contest.
Tonight's 2-1 victory marks the first regulation win against Kansas City and the first regulation win against a nationally ranked opponent in the DI-era.
Earning their fourth win of the season against the Roos, the Tommies have set a program record of single-season wins in the DI-era.
QUOTABLE
"The group needed this victory to reinforce a new standard we have been emphasizing daily," Head Coach Jon Lowery said. "I'm most impressed with each player stepping up and giving everything they can for the team. We are a depleted squad with injuries and have been for weeks, but this group wouldn't buy into that. We competed well against a very good top-25 team who will battle for the Summit League title."
