VanArragon led the way for the Tommies’ second consecutive team title at their home meet
STILLWATER, Minn. – Kathryn VanArragon nearly led the second annual Tommie Invite from wire-to-wire for her second career individual title. The sophomore last won a tournament at the Tommies' inaugural home event in 2023 and returned to the competition in top form. Overall, the Tommies also repeated as champions of their home tournament with a team score of 305-302-300—907 (+43) over the course of a blustery cold two days at StoneRidge Golf Club. The Purple finished 10 strokes clear of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (+53) in second place.
North Dakota (+61) and Northern Iowa (+83) rounded out the team competition.
VanArragon finished two strokes lower than the 32-golfer field with a 75-72-73—220 (+4). The sophomore rounded into shape shooting an even-par second round with three birdies and three bogeys to bounce back from a 75 (+3) first round. She began the second day just how she ended the first with four birdies, eight pars, and a bogey through the first 13 holes (-3) but the persistent cold got to her (as it did every golfer) as she finished with a double on 15 and with bogey on 16 and 17. She led her team after every round posting the lowest individual scores and led the field with 10 total birdies.
Junior, Emma Davies played great golf and earned her first top five finish of the season. She improved over the course of each round shooting 76-75-74—225 (+9) and moved up one spot during the final round. Highlighting Davies tournament were her back-to-back birdies on the first two holes of the second round and her eagle on the par 5 11th hole of that same round. She made par on 12 of the first 13 holes on day two with birdies on 14 and 17, bogeys on 6, 18, and a double on 16. She birdied or parred the ninth hole each round of the event while finishing second for the Tommies during the final two rounds.
Isabelle Lynch finished tied for 8th place with a 75-77-80—232 (+16) and did not move up or down the order despite her third-round struggles. The 11th hole was the senior's best with two eagles and a birdie across the three rounds. She recorded half of the entire fields four eagles during the competition. She also shot a staggering -4 on StoneRidge's Par 5's, three strokes better than any other competitor.
Nicole Reineke was the highest climber of any golfer during the final round as she marched nine spots up the leader board into 11th place with a 79-82-74—235 (+19). Her final round was the best of her tournament in a true bounce back performance after a frustrating first day.
Amelia Morton finished one stroke and one place behind Reineke with a 79-78-79—236 (+20). She finished as one of the Tommies' top four golfers in both the second and third rounds.
The Tommies also had three athletes competing as individuals: Claire Schweim took a share of 20th place with an 84-78-81—243 (+27), Mallory Belka finished in 24th place with a 78-79-87—244 (+28), and Katie Foley finished in a tied for 27th place with an 83-80-88—251 (+35).
Up Next
The Tommies will not take to a golf course for competition again until February 2025 after finishing the fall season on the highest of notes.
