Sajevic scores twice and Frank tallies 29 saves in WCHA victory
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The St. Thomas women's hockey team opened WCHA play against the Minnesota State Mavericks on Friday afternoon. Taking the early lead, the Tommies (3-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) held the advantage through the remainder of the game, defeating Minnesota State (2-1-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) by a score of 4-3 at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
RECAP
After a scoreless start in Mendota Heights, Cara Sajevic recorded the first goal of the game for the Tommies. Shortly after, Rylee Bartz added her third goal in three games to put St. Thomas up 2-0.
With four minutes to play in the opening frame, Minnesota State cut the Tommies' lead in half, sending the game into the first intermission as a one-score match-up.
Once again, three goals were scored in the middle frame, beginning with Sajevic. At the midpoint of the second period, Sajevic extended the Tommies' lead, tallying her second of the game and third of the season on a breakaway opportunity.
Minnesota State added its second of the game with four minutes to play in the second, but St. Thomas quickly responded with a goal of its own as Nicole Vallario posted her first of the season. St. Thomas went into the second break with a 4-2 lead.
With just over four minutes remaining in the game, St. Thomas was sent to the box for tripping, putting the Mavericks on the player advantage late in regulation. With an empty net for the Mavericks, the Tommies successfully defended the 6-on-4, however, Minnesota State tallied its third of the game just after the penalty expired.
Holding the one-goal advantage with two minutes to play, St. Thomas defeated Minnesota State 4-3 to open WCHA play with a victory.
Leading the Tommies, Sajevic, Vallario and Boreen all recorded multi-point games for the Purple.
Totaling 29 saves, Calla Frank earned her second win of the season following a shutout victory against Post a weekend ago.
