Women’s Soccer gives Denver a scare

10/10/2024 10:27:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Plenty of chances for the Tommies in their battle with the Summit League’s best side

DENVER, Colo. – A missed penalty kick, three hit crossbars, and one goal for the St. Thomas Women's Soccer team (4-7-2 overall, 0-3-1 Summit League) in their pursuit of an upset against the Summit League's best, Denver Pioneers (8-5-1 overall, 2-1-1 Summit League) that came up short at Denver Soccer Stadium, 3-1 on Thursday night.

Sophia Barjesteh ended the Toms' scoring drought that dated back to September 13th with her second goal of the season in the 70th minute just moments before Abby Brantner was stopped by Denver goalkeeper Molly Wissman on her penalty shot attempt.

Recap
Denver got things started in the first half with goals in the 27th and 31st minutes after the Tommies had applied pressure to begin the game. Overall, the Toms hit three crossbars, two in the first half. Denver outshot St. Thomas 9-3 overall and 3-2 on goal despite the Toms earning four corner kicks.

The final 45 were even more thrilling than the first. The Tommies made a surge of a comeback effort and outshot the Pioneers 9-6 with more near misses until Barjesteh scored her second of the season on a shot from just inside the 18-yard box. A hand ball in the 75th minute set up a possible game-tying penalty kick for Abby Brantner. The senior, who had already scored a penalty kick goal this season, sent a well-struck ball to the right of Denver's goaltender who guessed correctly and made a diving save.

Denver added an insurance goal in the 85th minute to styme St. Thomas' comeback bid.

Kendell Ellis made her third consecutive start in goal for the Tommies and made four saves on seven shots. Abby Brantner, Lissa Mizutani, and Ellie Tempero made up the defensive line in front of her and all played the full 90 minutes.

Up Next
The Tommies remain on the road for a Summit League matchup with the Omaha Mavericks on Sunday, October 13 at 1:00 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
