St. Thomas will play 49 games throughout the spring, including 15 games at Koch Diamond

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The St. Thomas baseball program has announced their schedule for the 2024 season. The Tommies schedule is jammed pack with tough competition, both in nonconference and Summit League play. In total, St. Thomas will play 49 games throughout the spring. The Tommies are slated to play 15 games at Koch Diamond, beginning with a three-game series against South Dakota State on March 22-24. The Tommies will play 19 non-conference games and a full 30-game Summit League schedule.

"Looking forward to this spring - I am excited about our potential to take a big step forward," Head Coach Chris Olean said. "We had an opportunity to play a number of younger players in our first two season at D1 and these players have gained valuable experience.  We will look to them, along with a few grad transfers, to carry the load this spring and I feel they are ready to take on that challenge. In addition, our freshmen class has increased the talent in the program as we are much more physical at multiple positions."

St. Thomas will begin their season at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida, facing Illinois State three times and Saint Louis once from Feb. 16-18. The Tommies will then travel to Southeast Missouri to play the Redhawks in a four-game series from Feb. 23-25.

Throughout March, the Purple will play Southern Indiana, Iowa, UIC and finish their 15-game road trip against conference opponent, Northern Colorado on March 15-17.

The Tommies will play six of 16 games at home throughout the month of April. St. Thomas will host conference opponents Omaha (April 5-7) and Northern Colorado (April 26-28) during the month, traveling for a 10-game stretch between these opponents.

The Tommies will begin the month of May with six games on the road, before returning home to wrap up the season, hosting Oral Roberts in their final series of the 2024 season.

The Tommies are returning 22 letterwinners from a season ago, including captains, Evan Esch, Kolby Gartner, Max Moris, Jacob Mrosko and Brigs Richartz.

"Offensively we will be led by returners Ben Vujovich, Brigs Richartz, Max Moris, Joe Roder, Joe Vos, along with few other returners competing for time," Coach Olean said.  "On the mound our depth is much improved.  We have a number of guys with an opportunity to be in the rotation lead by Evan Esch, Kolby Gartner, Walker Retz,  Nolan Kemp,  Devon Schewe,  Jacob Mrosko, and Wyatt Nelson.  All of these guys have the ability to miss bats and have shown they can fill up the zone and compete at a high level.  Our bullpen also has depth and talent."

There are 18 newcomers joining the Tommie Baseball program this season – 13 freshmen and five transfers.

"The addition of Grad Transfers Mikey Gottschalk and Max Nyrop gives us two established bats that have hit at a high level their entire careers.  Our freshman class is loaded with talent, and we have a number of guys who could make an immediate impact.  Tanner Recchio, Adam Puder, and Zan Von Schlegell all had solid falls and will compete for time on the infield.  They are an athletic group that do a number of things very well," said Coach Olean.

"As always, our keys to success will be our ability to take care of the baseball, limit free bases, and clutch hitting.  Our pitchers need to consistently work in plus counts and command the zone.  Defensively we are more athletic at a number of positions and should take a few more runs away this year as well.  Offensively we will continue to focus on quality at bats and a team approach. We have a great groups of guys who have really come together as group and have the drive and desire to continue to push the program in the right direction!"
