Men earn two event wins, including program record in 300m dash

MINNEAPOLIS -- The St. Thomas women's track & field program brought in five event wins Saturday at the Jack Johnson Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, while the men's squad added two event wins and a program record in the 300 meter dash.

Sophomore Mitchell Piehl won the 300m dash in 34.96, breaking the men's program record set by Rich Harkwell at the 1987 MIAC Indoor Conference Championships. Prior to Saturday, the Tommies had just one 300m dash participant since the 1996 indoor season.

Including Piehl's record-breaking race, the men totaled eight top three finishes. The team also saw student-athletes set 10 personal records and 11 top 10 marks in the Summit League.

The women finished with wins in the 4x400m relay, 300m dash, mile, 3000m run, and the triple jump. Freshman Rebecca Randleman won the 300m dash in 41.03 as the Tommies' top four finishers in the event all set the fastest times for the program since at least 2011. Junior Molly Desotell earned two event wins in the mile and the 3000m run. Her mile time of 5:01.21 ranks 10th in the Summit League this season while the team swept the top five finishes in the 3000m run.

The 4x400m relay win, run by Randleman, junior Hailey Hindt, junior Alicia Belany and sophomore Alexis Pratt, in 4:02.00 ranks fourth in the Summit League this season. Freshman Elise Biorn won the triple jump with a mark of 11.08m (36-feet-4.25-inches), setting one of the team's 12 personal records on the day while it was also the sixth best mark for the program since 2011.

MEN'S RESULTS
The men swept the top seven spots in the 3000m run, led by sophomore Caden Nordberg with a personal record of 8:22.09, which ranks third in program history and in the Summit League this year. Freshman Max Westerlund took second in 8:22.47 while junior Charles Caven finished third in 8:23.36. Westerlund and Caven's times rank fourth and fifth in both program history and in the Summit League this season, respectively.

Junior Isaiah Hopf took second in the long jump with a leap of 6.77m (22-2.50) and set the program's 12th best 60m dash time at 7.01, finishing seventh in the race Saturday. Freshman Joe McNeil set a personal record in the mile with a third-place time of 4:25.22 while fellow freshman Will DiSessa also took third in the triple jump with a mark of 13.72m (45-0.25).

Senior Nate Raddatz finished second in the heptathlon with a score of 4,615 to rank fifth in the Summit League this year. He also set the conference's fourth best mark in the long jump at 7.04m (23-1.25) during the heptathlon. Senior Grady Clem finished fourth in the high jump behind a personal record 1.99m (6-6.25), ranking seventh in the Summit League and 14th all-time at St. Thomas.

Pratt took second in the 60m dash finals with a time of 7.80 after qualifying with a time of 7.78. Sophomore Ava Wilber finished second in the 200m dash with a personal record time of 26.87 while Junior Taynian Walgrave placed second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.84.

Belany took third in the 600m run with a time of 1:39.22, senior Alaina Schoenfelder finished third in the high jump with a leap of 1.51m (4-11.50), and sophomore Brianna Fleek placed third in the long jump with a mark of 5.33m (17-6).

Freshman Morgan Koppelman took fourth in the pole vault with a personal record of 3.52m (11-6.50), which ranks fifth for the program since 2011. Junior Emma Potratz threw a personal record 16.47m (54-0.50) in the weight throw, taking eighth and setting the program's second best mark over the past 13 years.

QUOTEABLES
Thoughts from men's head coach Pete Wareham on Saturday's performances:
"We had several personal bests today in addition to several additional strong performances. I am happy with how we competed. We are building our competitive mindset each week and we will need this as future championship success is most determined by how hard we prepare and how we compete.

"We are looking forward to our next opportunity in Mankato."

Thoughts from women's head coach Ashley Lucas following the Jack Johnson Classic:
"The throwers continue to trend in a super positive direction and I thought the distance crew ran well in the mile and the 3K. Molly (Desotell), Ava (Pankratz) and Gabby (Witschen) helped out their teammates for the first mile of the 3K before winding down in the second half. I was also really impressed with Becca (Randleman) in the 300m dash and Morgan (Koppelman) setting a personal record in the pole vault.

"We're ready to make adjustments this week and get back quickly next week at the Ted Nelson Classic."
