Flurry of Firsts for Men's Hockey in 4-3 win
1/11/2024 11:10:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Tommies beat Michigan Tech for the first time on home ice.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (10-10-1, 8-5-0 CCHA) sought revenge against Michigan Tech (9-9-4, 6-5-0) for bouncing them from the 2022-23 CCHA playoffs in the first round. The Tommies came to play with two goals in the opening two minutes and a counter for every punch thrown by the Huskies in their first win against Tech on home ice.
RECAP
The first of the "firsts" came on the Toms' very first goal of the contest just 1:39 in. Matthew Gleason found Chase Cheslock on the blue line and the freshman whizzed a perfectly placed pace cross ice to Liam Malmquist who finished his fifth goal of the year. The assist was Cheslock's first collegiate point in his third game with the Tommies.
Seventeen seconds later the Purple added two more "firsts." Grant Docter and Brady Simmons-Fischer hooked up to find Tim Piechowski in front of the net. The third-year Tommie sent the puck passed reigning CCHA Goaltender of the Year Blake Pietila for the first goal of his season. Simmons-Fishcer's assist was also the first point of the year for the Michigan native.
St. Thomas killed off a penalty shortly after their second goal and the period concluded without any more scoring. Aaron Trotter made 10 saves in net and the Toms were 12-5 in the faceoff circle.
Nearly 36 minutes of in-game time vanished before a second barrage of goals came from the battling sides. Luc Laylin stemmed the drought from Jake Braccini and Docter but the Huskies answered three seconds later. The road team was not done there and added another tally 43 seconds after their first. In a span of 46 seconds the Toms' lead went from 2-0 to 3-2.
The Huskies outshot the Tommies 18-13 in the frame but came up empty on two power play opportunities.
The Purple were granted their first opportunity to head onto the power play at 7:37 in the final period. Mason Poolman, a freshman defenseman, stepped up from the blue line with the puck and fed it through traffic into the back of the net. It was Poolman's first career goal and the first goal scored by a Tommie defenseman this season.
Michigan Tech would not go quietly, scoring with seven minutes to go. St. Thomas locked it up defensively to allow just one shot through to Trotter after Tech's third score.
The Tommies came out on top in what was their fourth consecutive one-goal game against the Huskies dating back to their very first win on January 14 of last season. After 60 minutes the shots were even at 35 a piece, but the score tilted 4-3 towards the Purple.
