Women’s Soccer falls to South Dakota, 3-1 on the road

Molly Knoblauch scores the first goal of her career in a loss to the Coyotes
VERMILLION, S.D. – It was a hard-fought Thursday afternoon for the Tommies at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex in Vermillion, S.D. The women's soccer team came up short against South Dakota, 3-1. Molly Knoblauch scored the first goal of her career, the teams' only goal of the game. Mariah Nguyen assisted on Knoblauch's goal for the first assist of her career and increased her point streak to three games.
Despite St. Thomas outshooting South Dakota (14-11), it was the Coyotes who were able to capitalize more on the scoreboard. Olivia Rowe made three saves for St. Thomas with a total of six shots coming her way.
RECAP
The Tommies began the game on the defensive as the Coyotes were able to outshoot the Tommies (3-0) in the first 10 minutes of action. St. Thomas began to gather offensive momentum as they created shots left and right. The Tommies piled up four shots in a matter of roughly 13 minutes. After 20 minutes, South Dakota scored to lead 1-0. Following a series of back and forth plays, the Coyotes scored another goal to make it 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the half.
As time dwindled down in the 1st half, St. Thomas created an astounding four shots in five minutes. The Toms were unable to capitalize on their shots heading into the break with a 2-0 deficit. Despite being down 2-0, St. Thomas matched South Dakota's shot attempts (8-8) during the first half.
The Tommies and Coyotes kicked off the second half with both teams shooting in the first five minutes. Olivia Rowe denied South Dakota's shot with her second save of the night. Shortly after, St. Thomas had back-to-back unsuccessful shots in a matter of seconds. Both teams displayed their defensive ability as neither offense gained much traction for the next 10 minutes.
In the 69th minute, Mariah Nguyen assisted Molly Knoblauch for the first goal of her career to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes to go. The Coyotes quickly responded with a goal of their own making it a 3-1 game. In the remaining 10 minutes, St. Thomas churned out one more shot attempt which was denied by South Dakota. Time expired with the Coyotes on top, 3-1.
