Late-inning runs hand Tommies 12-9 comeback win over Aggies
5/19/2023 12:26:00 AM | Baseball
Four Tommies drove in two RBI in the game that featured 15 hits and 12 runners left on base for the Purple. Six Tommies recorded two hits while Matthew Enck and Dylan O'Connell scored three runs each.
The Tommies grabbed a 4-0 lead early as Enck and Charlie Bartholomew both singled in two runs on singles to start the second inning. The Aggies came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Brigs Richartz led off the fourth inning with a triple, his third of the season, and scored on a wild pitch to extend the St. Thomas lead to 5-2. O'Connell led off the next inning with a double while Sam Kulesa sent the first pitch he saw through the right side to drive in the run and regain its four-run lead.
Beginning with two RBI singles by NMSU in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Aggies made their way back to take the lead on a grand slam in the sixth.
Enck led off the eighth inning with a single to left field while a walk and fielder's choice put him on third with one out. Max Moris brought in the run on a sacrifice fly, before a hit by pitch and stolen base put runners on second and third base. Joe Roder put a hard hit ball up the middle that could not be cleanly handled, allowing Richartz to score to trail by one, 9-8. Bartholomew, who reached on the hit by pitch, came around to tie the game on a wild pitch.
The Tommies led off their sixth inning with a baserunner, this time by O'Connell on a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt from Kulesa advanced the runner before Vujovich came up with a two-RBI triple to gain the final lead. Moris followed two at-bats later to bring in Vujovich on a single to left field.
Owen Marsh (1-3) earned the win after throwing 2.1 innings with three strikeouts, including one to end the eighth inning and strand two NMSU runners. Bryce Leedle earned his first save of the season, allowing one walk but striking out two to close the win.
St. Thomas and New Mexico State continue the series Friday at 6 p.m. from Presley Askew Field.
