Ede's fast PR, Walgrave record leads Women's T&F on Friday

5/12/2023 10:25:00 PM | Women's Track & Field

Fargo, N.D. -- Sophomore Morgan Ede and Josie Liebl scored team points with top-eight finishes Friday, and junior Taynian Walgrave recorded an official school record in the 100 hurdles in the prelims to lead Tommie Women's Track and Field on day two of the Summit League outdoor championship meet.

The three-day competition on the North Dakota State campus concludes Saturday.

Ede placed fifth in the steeplechase (career-best 11:12.68) for four team points. She sliced 12 seconds off her personal best and 61 seconds off of her 2022 conference time in the steeplechase in what was a 10th-place finish.

Liebl added two team points with a seventh-place finish in the seven-event heptathlon, as her 4,134 points established a career best.

With nine of 21 events completed, St. Thomas sits in fifth place with 20 points. South Dakota (117.5) leads with North Dakota State (78.8) and North Dakota (70) in the chase for second. Rounding out the team leaders are South Dakota State (53.3) St. Thomas (20), Western Illinois (5), Kansas City (4) and Omaha (2.3).

The final 12 women's events will be held Saturday.

The Toms advanced in four women's events in Friday's prelim races: freshman Alexis Pratt with collegiate bests in both the 100 (11.89) and 200 (24.53) dashes; Hailey Hindt in the 400 hurdles (63.45); and Walgrave in the 100 hurdles (13.98). Last month Walgrave ran a wind-aided 13.98 time, but Friday's 13.98 clocking was wind legal, and it breaks national champion Mallory Burnham's 2014 school record of 14.02

St. Thomas received Friday top-15 placings from Mara McNaughton in the heptathlon (ninth, 3,632 points); freshman Alix Gifford in the steeplechase (11th, 11:56.89); Caroline Anderson in the high jump (13th, 5-1 1-4); and in the long jump, freshmen Olivia Keller (10th, 18-9 1-4) and Cassia Cady (13th, 18-6) recorded personal bests.
