Softball can't close out Coyotes in 12-8 loss

4/30/2023 5:55:00 PM | Softball

Vermillion, S.D. -- Host South Dakota erupted for nine runs after two were out in the fourth inning Sunday to erase a 7-0 deficit and went on to score a 12-8 victory over St. Thomas Softball to complete a sweep of a three-game weekend series.

The Purple (16-34 overall, 4-13 Summit) had 11 hits, including two triples and four doubles. They left eight runners on base. They lost despite two-hit offensive performances by Brooke Ellestad (two doubles), Coryn Jacobson and Abbi Stierlen, plus triples by Avery Wukawitz and Katie Goelz, and Kam Monson's two-run double.

Tommie starter Kiera Murphy retired 11 of the first 12 Coyote batters, including the first two of the fourth inning, and had a no-hitter through that 3 2-3 innings span. After USD erupted with five singles and two walks, Murphy was replaced with the lead trimmed to 7-4 and the bases still loaded.

South Dakota tied the game at 7-7 with a bases-clearing double, went ahead to stay on an RBI double, and capped the uprising with an RBI single.

The Coyotes (22-23, 11-6) pulled away with a solo homer in the fifth inning and two unearned runs after two were out in the sixth inning.

St. Thomas closes its season with three homes games next weekend vs. Kansas City.
