Softball matches up with talented pitching staff of NDSU, drops doubleheader

Game 1
Despite Tommie sophomore pitcher Ella Cook holding the powerful North Dakota State offense scoreless through the first three frames, the St. Thomas softball team was unable to scrounge up much offensively itself, falling 5-0 in the first game of a double header Sunday at South Field.
The Tommies' inability to produce came much at the hands of North Dakota State senior pitcher Paige Vargas, who racked up a personal-best 14 strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Vargas also surpassed her 500-career strikeout achievement in the game, now totaling 513.
The Tommies (15-29, 4-9 Summit), however, did manage three hits off Vargas, two of which came from the Tommies' leadoff batter Avery Wukawitz. The first-year outfielder started off the Tommies' first at bat with a hard-hit triple down the right field line, but the fly out and two strikeouts that followed quickly shut down their early momentum.
The Bison (25-16, 9-5 Summit) broke the game open in the fourth inning as first-year infielder Bella Dean crushed a two-run home run off an inside pitch by Cook.
Cook allowed eight hits (five earned), four walks, two hit batters and struck out three Bison.
However, the Bison were not satisfied with a two-run lead as Dean tacked on another RBI in the seventh inning as North Dakota added three more runs to push the game out of the Tommies' reach. Although St. Thomas got runners on first and second base in the bottom of the inning, it could not get enough offensive production to break its scoreless streak.
Game 2
A three-hit, four-RBI outing for North Dakota State junior outfielder Emilee Buringa highlighted the Bison's 9-0 win over the Tommies in game two of Sunday's double header.
Senior pitcher Isabelle True was in the circle for the Tommies, but much of her usual movement and strikeout capability did not work for her in the game. True pitched 3.2 innings and allowed six runs (all earned) on six hits and walked two before junior Grace Bennett replaced her.
Buringa started the Bison's scoring deluge in the second inning with a two-RBI single to give North Dakota State the lead early.
However, the Tommies answered back with some clutch defense in the top of the third before the Bison managed four more runs off True in the fourth inning. Three of the runs came thanks to a two-RBI center-field home run by Buringa followed by a home run by sophomore infielder Chloe Woldruff.
Despite this, the Tommies managed a better game offensively in the second game than the first as they managed four hits, two walks and only struck out twice. However, the Tommies only reached scoring position three times and left five on base.
Junior infielder Katie Goelz led the team with two hits, both of which were singles.
Bennett pitched 2.1 relief innings, allowing three runs on four hits, one walk and struck out one batter.
The Tommies look to answer back in the third game of the series against the Bison on Monday at 2 p.m. at South Field.
