Softball's two-run third inning not enough, drop series finale with NDSU

St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball (15-30, 4-10 Summit League) racked up nine hits and scored two runs in the third inning but were handed their fourth consecutive loss on Monday afternoon at South Field, 6-2 against North Dakota State (26-16, 10-5 Summit League).
The Bison's number one starting pitcher, Paige Vargas was given the ball for the second time in the series but did not have the same success against the Tommies that she saw earlier on. Vargas went all seven innings in NDSU's 5-0 win in game one and struck out a career-high 14.
St. Thomas' offense came ready to play their second time against the talented right hander. They chased her from the game after just two and two thirds innings pitched. They were able to collect five hits, a walk, and two runs.
Kaitlyn Raymond and Avery Wukawitz each singled to begin the third inning and ultimately scored in the frame. Coryn Jacobson brought around Raymond on a sacrifice fly deep to right field and freshman Abbi Stierlen brought home Wukawitz with a single to tie the game, 2-2.
Game two starter, Lainey Lyle came in and recorded the final out of the Tommies' third inning. Lyle kept the Toms out of the run column for the rest of the game.
The longball was a factor for North Dakota State. They launched five in the series and two in the game. First, a two-run shot in the third to give the Bison a 2-0 lead and then a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to expand their lead, 6-2.
Avery Wukawitz, Kaitlyn Raymond, and Katie Goelz each tallied two hits in the game. Wukawitz's leadoff double in the bottom of the first inning was the only extra-base hit for St. Thomas. Kameron Monson walked two times and reached safely on a base hit in the seventh.
