Bison sweep series opening doubleheader as Tommies open home play

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Thomas Baseball was handed a doubleheader sweep to open home play and a three-game series against North Dakota State on Friday afternoon. The Bison came away with wins of 13-3 in eight innings and 10-4 at Koch Diamond.
Game One – L, 13-3 (8)
North Dakota State jumped out to an early lead with four runs on two hits, which included two St. Thomas errors. The Bison added another three runs in the top of the second inning before the Toms reached base.
Charlie Bartholomew led off the second inning with the first of three singles in the game, setting up an RBI triple by Ben Vujovich that was just out of reach of a diving NDSU outfielder. Another triple, this time by Tanner Marsh, set up the Tommies' second run in the bottom of the third inning. Max Moris was retired on a ground ball with one out to allow Marsh to score and cut the deficit to five, 7-2.
The Bison crossed one run in the fourth inning behind two doubles with another in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-2. Brigs Richartz recorded a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored the final Tommies run on Bartholomew's final single of the game.
Bartholomew finished 3-of-3 with one RBI and Vujovich went 2-of-3 with one RBI, combining for five of the team's seven hits in the game. Kolby Gartner (1-4) started the game and threw 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and three walks in the loss.
Game Two – L, 10-4
The Tommies faced an early deficit again in game two as the Bison scored three runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run. Dylan O'Connell led off the home half of the first with a single followed by a Bison error to allow Richartz to reach. Moris followed two batters later with a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Bison strung together six runs to start the second inning on six hits and three Tommies errors. St. Thomas threatened in the bottom half but saw Parker Mathieson stranded on third.
Richartz reached on another Bison error to start the third inning and scored the Tommies' third run of the game on an RBI single by Joe Vos.
Walker Retz (0-3) got into a groove after the second inning, allowing just one baserunner between the third and sixth frames. All five of his strikeouts came during the four-inning stretch to keep the Tommies within six, 9-3.
Moris led off the sixth inning with his second hit of the game, a double to right field and was moved to third during the next at-bat. Tanner Marsh singled to left field with two outs to drive in the run and bring the Tommies within five, 9-4.
The Tommies were plagued by double plays throughout the game, hitting into one to finish the first, third, fifth and ninth innings.
Mathieson, Moris and Vos all recorded multiple hits while Moris drove in two RBI. Richartz scored two runs after reaching base three times by three errors.
St. Thomas and North Dakota State close out the three-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday from Koch Diamond.
