Kulesa walk-off hit hands Tommie Baseball 2-1 win over Bison

4/15/2023 5:08:00 PM | Baseball

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Junior Sam Kulesa played hero on a rainy Saturday afternoon as his single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave St. Thomas Baseball a 2-1 walk-off win to cap the series against North Dakota State.

Joe Roder singled with one out in the second inning for the Tommies' first hit of the day and was brought home during the next at-bat, an RBI double by Ben Vujovich down the right field line. Roder accounted for both of the Purple's runs on the day as the 1-0 lead stuck until the top of the ninth inning.

Starting pitcher Evan Esch threw 6.0 innings of scoreless ball, finishing with five strikeouts, two hits and two walks. Duke Coborn (2-2) earned the win after throwing the final 3.0 innings with three strikeouts.

After a leadoff walk set up an RBI single by NDSU to tie the game in the ninth inning, Roder led off the home half with his second single and finished as the only Tommie with multiple hits. A sacrifice bunt by Vujovich advanced Roder to second base before an intentional walk added a runner to first.

Kulesa, who entered the game in the top of the sixth inning, made his second plate appearance and sent the walk-off single to right field to drive in Roder for the game-winning run.

Six Tommies accounted for the team's seven hits while the unit struck out just three times compared to eight for the Bison.

St. Thomas returns to the diamond Wednesday, April 19 with a 6 p.m. first pitch at Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.
