BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Freshman Ben Taxdahl accounted for his second career home run Sunday afternoon as part of two doubleheader defeats of 8-5 and 7-0 at South Dakota State. Taxdahl and fellow freshman Dylan O'Connell accounted the Tommies' only RBI hits in the game played at Bob Shelden Field.

Game One – L, 8-5
The Jacks got off to a quick start with three runs in the first inning and two in the second, including a two-RBI single in each frame.

Ben Vujovich got the St. Thomas bats going in the top of the fourth inning with a lead-off single. He was caught stealing during the next at-bat before Max Moris and Charlie Bartholomew came up with back-to-back singles. Ben Taxdahl drove out his second career home run to right center field, driving in three runs to cut the deficit to two.

The Tommies also reached to lead off the fifth inning, a throwing error to put Sam Kulesa on first. Following a sacrifice bunt, Dylan O'Connell came up with the first of his two RBI hits in the game. St. Thomas didn't score again until O'Connell's two-out RBI single in the ninth inning.

Kolby Gartner (1-5) made his seventh start of the season for the Toms and settled down following the early-game runs. He retired nine of 10 batters faced between the third and sixth innings and ended his day with five strikeouts. Tucker Huhn threw the final 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.

Game Two – L, 7-0
South Dakota State took another first-inning lead in game two behind a lead-off triple and a two-run home run. The Jacks led off the second inning with a single that was later scored on an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0.

Joe Roder and Vujovich both singled in the second inning and were the Tommies' only baserunners until the seventh inning. Brigs Richartz led off the seventh with a single and Sam Kulesa reached on a hit by pitch in the eighth before the Tommies side was sent down in order to finish the game.

Walker Retz (0-4) threw the first 5.2 innings and tied a season high six strikeouts. Nolan Kemp and Max Skilbeck closed the final 2.1 innings for the Tommies, combining for three strikeouts with no hits or runs allowed.

St. Thomas and South Dakota State conclude the three-game series Monday at 1 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field.
