BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Sophomore pitcher Evan Esch continued his recent hot streak with a career outing Monday afternoon as St. Thomas Baseball fell 2-1 at South Dakota State. Esch tallied 11 strikeouts with one hit allowed as the Jackrabbits won in walk-off fashion at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings, S.D.
Esch's 11 strikeouts set a career high, surpassing his previous high of seven, after throwing 6.0 innings. He struck out eight of the first nine SDSU batters and retired 13 straight batters between the second and sixth innings.
The Jacks led off the game with a double and scored its first run following a passed ball and a wild pitch with two outs. Esch struck out the side in the opening frame and retired 15 of 17 batters faced to end his outing.
The Tommies' lone run of the game scored from the bat of Ben Taxdahl, who recorded his second home run in as many days. St. Thomas led off the seventh inning with a single and put another on by walk in the frame but otherwise reached just one baserunner in the ninth.
Duke Coborn (2-3) took the loss after throwing 2.1 innings with five hits allowed and striking out the side in the seventh.
The 11 strikeouts by Esch are the most for a Tommie in a game since Graham Laubscher racked up 15 April 9, 2022 against North Dakota State.
