Men's Golf uses balance, grit to claim one-stroke victory

Elk Horn, Neb. -- St. Thomas Men's Golf continued its hot streak as it recorded its third team victory of the 2022-23 school year.  The Purple edged Northern Iowa by one stroke and topped host Omaha by three at the two-day, 54-hole Stampede at the Creek tourney which concluded here Tuesday.

Coach Matt Rachey's Tommies won a 14-team fall tournament last October hosted by Omaha on the same course, and last weekend won a 10-team tournament in Illinois. This marks three team wins in seven tournaments on the school year.

In this event, the Toms beat Summit League teams Omaha, North Dakota and Western Illinois. All six Tommies scored for the team in at least one of the rounds.

In Tuesday's final round, seniors Matthew Raab and Matthew Garside stepped up with final scores of 71 and 72 to help the Toms edge the Panthers. St. Thomas had team scores of 288, 284 and 293. 

Will Frazier tied for fourth place in a field of 54 players at 217 with scores of 74, 68, 75, including eight birdies. Matthew Armstrong was one shot back at 218 tied for eighth place after rounds of 73-70-75, with one eagle and seven birdies.

Garside tied for 13th place at 220 with scores of 71-77-72, including seven birdies. Glavine Schugel tied for 20th at 223 with scores of 70-75-78, including one eagle and nine birdies.

Raab had scores of 77-76-71/224, including nine birdies. Freshman Owen Rexing shot 78-71-76/225, including 10 birdies.
