Golf teams sharp on Monday; final holes pushed into Tuesday

Elk Horn, Neb. -- Play was halted in the second round with a few holes remaining due to darkness at Monday's Stampede at the Creek tournament hosted by the University of Omaha.

Golfers will finish round two at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 11 before beginning the third round.

Western Illinois', Creighton's, and Omaha's women were able to get through the second round and both played 36 holes on Monday.

Men's Day 1 Recap

On the men's side, St. Thomas played the first 18 holes at even-par 288. The Purple will go into Tuesday's final 20 holes at two-under par. For those first 34 holes they were able to compete, they sit in second place, three shots behind leader Omaha, one ahead of Northern Iowa, and five strokes ahead of fourth-place Bradley.

In a field of 54 players, Will Frazier is at two-under par through 34 holes. He opened at 74, and in his second round, he has four birdies and no bogeys. Matthew Armstrong is in seventh place at one-under par through 34 holes. He opened at 73, and for round two so far he has an eagle and two birdies over 16 holes.

Glavine Schugel and Matthew Garside are tied for 21st place. Schugel shot a 70 in round one, and is six-over through 16 holes of round two. Garside had five birdies in his opening 18 with a 71, and is five over through 16 holes on round two.

Owen Rexing opened with a 78, but so far in round two he's one-under par through 17 holes with six birdies.

Matthew Raab shot 77 in round one, and is four-over par through 16 holes of round two.


Women's Day 1 Recap

The Tommie women have 21 holes to play on Tuesday. They are nine behind leader Creighton and seven behind North Dakota State after Monday's 33 holes. 

Isabelle Lynch is tied for second place in a field of 60 players after an opening-round 71, and her two-over par through 15 holes so far on round two.

Emma Davies is tied for seventh place after an opening 76 score and her even-par score through 15 holes.

Caroline Monty shot a 73 in round one and is five-over par so far through 15 holes on round two to sit in a tie for 13th place.

Courtney Wedin is tied for 26th with two very different scorecards. After opening with an 82 in round one, she's played the first 15 holes of round two at even par.

-- St. Thomas Golf will send the men's and women's teams to Elkhorn, Neb., for this week's two-day tournament at Indian Creek Golf Course, hosted by the University of Omaha.


Men's Golf

The Tommie men are coming off a win over nine other teams at last week's Western Illinois tournament. Last fall, Coach Matt Rachey's team also won the 14-team Omaha fall tournament on this same course.

The Purple will enter seniors Matthew Raab and Matthew Garside; juniors Matthew Armstrong, Will Frazier and Glavine Schugel; and freshman Owen Rexing.

St. Thomas has a 294.5 stroke average over 17 rounds and six tournaments, three strokes better than the 2021-22 team in the inaugural Division I season. Just one stroke separates the top several Tommies this school year, led by Armstrong and Raab (74.2) and Frazier (74.3). Six different players have posted the team's low score over at least one of the team's 17 rounds this season.

Other teams in this week's field are host Omaha, North Dakota and Western Illinois of the Summit League; Nebraska, Northern Iowa, UW-Green Bay and Bradley.


Women's Golf

The Tommie women are coming off a late March tournament in South Carolina. Coach Katie Hanneman's team only has one remaining competition after this week's Omaha tourney -- the April 23-25 conference championship meet in Lincoln, Neb.

St. Thomas has a 309 stroke average over 17 rounds and six tournaments, 23 strokes better than the 2021-22 team in the inaugural Division I season. Courtney Wedin leads the Purple in low stroke average at 75.9 Just one stroke separates the next four Tommie players this school year: Isabelle Lynch, Caroline Monty, Emma Davies and Lauren Contreras. Five different players have posted the team's low score over at least one of the 17 rounds this season.

Other teams in the field are host Omaha, North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota and Western Illinois of the Summit League; Northern Iowa, UW-Green Bay and Creighton.
