Women's Hoops keeps the Faith, wins tourney opener

3/3/2023 3:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Sioux Falls, S.D. – Senior Maggie Negaard scored all of her game-high 18 points in the second half as No. 8-seed St. Thomas Women's Basketball broke open a tight game in the final two quarters to post a 61-50 victory over No. 9-seed Western Illinois in a first-round Summit League Tournament game here Friday afternoon.

St. Thomas was making its Division I-era postseason basketball debut in season two after reclassifying from D-III.

Freshman Faith Feuerbach matched her career high with 12 points off the bench for Coach Ruth Sinn's Tommies (13-16), who have won five of their last six contests.

The Toms advance to Saturday's quarterfinal match against top-seed South Dakota State set for 12:30 p.m.

The Tommies outscored Western 30-9 at the 3-point line. After converting just 3-of-14 behind the arc in the first half, the Purple made 7-of-12 treys in the final 20:00. Negaard made three 3-pointers in the final quarter to help ice the victory.

St. Thomas also posted a 23-12 advantage in bench scoring and a 45-39 edge in rebounding.

Sophomore point guard Jade Hill finished with nine points and six assists. Sophomore Jo Langbehn added nine points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Amber Scalia recorded eight points and four boards. Seniors Jordyn Glynn (six rebounds) and Autam Mendez (five boards, four blocks) and sophomore Jordyn Lamker (six rebounds) also made key contributions.

Western (10-20) had its last lead at 33-32 in quarter three. The Toms, who led 24-19 at halftime and 39-33 after three quarters, closed the game on a 29-17 run over the final 12:43.

After the Leathernecks pulled within 41-35 early in the fourth quarter, Scalia sank two treys and Negaard and Feuerbach each made one to lead a 12-3 run for a 15-point cushion.

Feurbach sank three treys in the second quarter, and Scalia made two treys in the fourth quarter.

Under Coach Ruth Sinn, St. Thomas is 20-6 in March games over the last 10 seasons.

St. Thomas has improved six victories over its seven-win season of last winter in its D-I debut. The Toms have the third best record among the 11 teams reclassifying into Division I.
