Top of the order excels despite series opening loss to Oral Roberts, 10-2

3/17/2023 6:59:00 PM | Baseball

Tulsa, Okla. -- The top of the order excelled Friday afternoon despite a 10-2 loss by St. Thomas Baseball in the series opener at Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla.

The top four batters in the Tommie lineup recorded two hits each, including two runs scored by Brigs Richartz and RBIs from Ben Vujovich and Dylan O'Connell.

Richartz led off the game with a hit on the first pitch, his fourth leadoff hit of the season, to set up the game's first run. Following a sacrifice bunt from Max Moris, Vujovich and O'Connell came up with singles during the next two at-bats. O'Connell's RBI single went up the middle to bring in Richartz with one out before the following two batters were retired for the Tommies.

The Tommies reached base just one time between the second and fifth innings, a leadoff single by O'Connell in the fourth.

The Golden Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the second inning as a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt set up an RBI single. ORU later took its final lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as two walks and a two-out single drove in two runs to go ahead, 3-1.

St. Thomas cut the lead down to one during the next half inning as Richartz led off the sixth with a single up the middle. Moris followed with a double to center field while Vujovich singled to right field to bring in Richartz.

Oral Roberts scored three runs in the seventh and four in the eighth inning to seal the game.

The Tommies finished with eight hits, all coming from the top four hitters in the lineup and left six on base. The Golden Eagles drew 10 walks and totaled nine hits while leaving nine runners stranded.

Five Tommie pitchers combined for nine strikeouts while Evan Esch (1-2) took the loss after throwing 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and three hits allowed.

St. Thomas and Oral Roberts continue the series with game two of three Saturday at 2 p.m.
