Women’s Basketball seniors go out in style with 74-68 win over North Dakota

2/25/2023 6:11:00 PM | Women's Basketball

St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Thomas Women's Basketball celebrated senior day in style with a physical 74-68 win Saturday over North Dakota at Schoenecker Arena.

Seniors Jordyn Glynn, Autam Mendez, and Maggie Negaard each helped the Tommies (12-16, 7-11 Summit) to a second half, double digit comeback to top the Fighting Hawks, who entered the game in second place of the Summit League standings.

The Tommies rode a high from their pregame senior day ceremonies into the first quarter with a 10-2 run over the first three minutes of action. Negaard sank two of her three 3-pointers during the run while Jo Langbehn accounted for the other two St. Thomas baskets.

The Fighting Hawks cut the Tommie lead to two before Negaard's final 3-pointer of the game pushed the lead back to seven, 15-8. UND held St. Thomas without a score through the remainder of the quarter to head into the second with a 15-15 tie.

Amber Scalia came off the bench to prevent North Dakota from taking the lead in the second quarter. She went 3-of-3 from 3-point range and finished with 11 of her 16 points in the second frame. Following her final 3-pointer of the quarter to take a 29-25 lead, UND converted a layup with 1:31 to play for the half's final score.

The momentum swung into UND's favor to begin the second half as it started on a 7-2 run to take its first lead since the first minute of the game. The Tommies made 5-of-10 shots in the third quarter but gave away nine turnovers that led to 16 points for the Fighting Hawks. UND took its first double digit lead, 43-33, nearly five minutes in and held a game-high lead of 13, 52-39, three minutes later.

Not scoring since the first quarter, Negaard drew a foul following the 13-point deficit and made all three shots to begin another momentum swing. The Tommies got to the free throw line for six shots before the end of the quarter, which helped cut the deficit to five, 54-49, heading into the fourth.

Scalia hit her fourth and final 3-pointer of the game to begin the fourth quarter, which was part of a 20-2 run spanning back to Negaard's three free throw makes with 1:46 in the third quarter.  Another 3-pointer by Mendez capped the run and gave the Tommies a five-point, 59-54 lead.

The Tommie defense limited the Fighting Hawks to 2-of-11 shooting in the final quarter and scored 11 points off six UND turnovers. Langbehn connected on a layup off a UND turnover for the largest St. Thomas lead of the game, 68-58, with 5:29 to play.

An and-one conversion by UND then began an 8-0 run to cut the St. Thomas lead to two with under three minutes to go. Jade Hill drove in the lane for a layup while the Tommies sealed the game with four free throws.

Negaard went 12-of-12 from the free throw line, her only scoring in the second half, and set a St. Thomas Division I era record for most free throws made without a miss.

Scalia followed Negaard in scoring with a career high 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting, 4-of-5 coming from behind the 3-point arc. Langbehn chipped in 15 points with three rebounds and one assist.

St. Thomas shot 43.5 percent from the field (20-46), 42.9 percent from 3-point range (9-21), and 80.6 percent from the free throw line (25-31). North Dakota finished 37.3 percent from the floor (22-59), 33.3 percent from long range (6-18), and 94.7 percent from the free throw line (18-19).

The Tommies are locked in as the No. 8 seed for the 2023 Summit League Championships after winning four of their last five games. St. Thomas will take on Western Illinois to begin the tournament at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 3 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
