Softball struggles to find traction at Evansville Invite
2/24/2023 10:38:00 PM | Softball
Game One Recap
The Tommies (4-7) fell in game one of the Evansville Invite, 5-2 to the Bowling Green Falcons (4-7) despite Brooke Ellestad's three-hit performance Friday afternoon.
Ella Cook came in for relief in the second inning and allowed two earned runs, tallied six strikeouts in 5.2 innings out of the bullpen. Cook's six-strikeout outing was the first of the season from a St. Thomas arm, and the most in one game since Christina Crawford went six innings with seven strikeouts in a loss to North Dakota State on May 6th, 2022.
Grace Bennett roped her first career homerun in the bottom of the third inning to bring the score within one. Bennett finished the day going 1-3 with two RBI and a walk.
The only other runner who scored for St. Thomas was Brooke Ellestad. She went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two doubles and a hit-by-pitch (the first of her career). Ellestad hit two doubles in 42 games all last season and has already surpassed that total after hitting her second and third doubles in game 11 of 2023.
Defensively, the Tommies did not commit an error for the first time this season. Katie Goelz tallied eight putouts from an infield of Mackenzie Rudy, Brooke Ellestad, and Sydney Mickett. Maddie Grad sent down one runner that attempted a steal.
St. Thomas finished with seven hits in the game: Avery Wukawitz with a single in the seventh, and Katie Goelz with two hits including her second double of the season.
Game Two Recap
The Tommies (4-8) scored all nine of their runs in the top of the first inning against the Evansville Purple Aces (10-1) ultimately falling 12-9 in seven innings on Friday night in Evansville, Indiana.
St. Thomas got things started in a hurry when Brooke Ellestad doubled into the outfield to bring home Avery Wukawitz who led off the inning with a single. One batter later, Grace Bennett sent her second homerun of the season, and of the day (2-run homerun against Bowling Green), over the outfield fence to bring home Kaitlyn Raymond and Ellestad.
Kameron Monson, Sydney Mickett, Avery Wukawitz, and Brooke Ellestad each added on more RBI in the inning to bring the Tommies lead up to 9-0. The Purple had seven hits in the inning to go along with two walks.
From that point forward it would be all Purple Aces. They scored three in the second, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and five in the sixth to complete the comeback from down 9-0. The Aces had six players with two RBI in the ballgame.
St. Thomas' Avery Wukawitz and Brooke Ellestad each marked three hits in the game. All three of Wukawitz' hits were singles. She stole her team-leading fourth bag of the season as well.
Ellestad had one double against Evansville, which when added with her efforts against Bowling Green, gave her three doubles on the day to go along with six total hits.
Kameron Monson and Maddie Grad each reached base safely twice, once via a single and once via a base on balls.
