Bison pull away in second half to down Men’s Basketball, 73-64

Fargo, N.D. -- In a game with Summit League Tournament seeding implications on the line, the St. Thomas Men's Basketball team was bested by North Dakota State, 73-64, Thursday night in Fargo, N.D.
The Tommies saw a three-point halftime lead taken over by a second-half push from the Bison, who seized third place in the conference standings with one game remaining in the regular season.
The first half remained within two possessions of either team and featured 11 lead changes, including five over the first four minutes. Brooks Allen sank back-to-back 3-pointers for the Tommies for the fifth lead change of the game, putting the Tommies ahead early, 9-7.
Layups from Ryan Dufault and Kendall Blue gave St. Thomas its largest leads of the game at four points. The Bison came out of a media timeout at the 10:00 mark to go on a 6-0 run, including four free throws, for their first lead in seven minutes.
Parker Bjorklund put in his second 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead down while back-to-back 3-pointers from Ben Nau handed a two-point lead back to St. Thomas, 26-24. Following a mid-range jumper from NDSU on the next possession, both teams hit a cold spell with no points being scored over a four-minute span.
The Tommies scored five of the final seven points of the first half to take a 31-28 lead into halftime. The lead changed another four times to start the second half, with the Bison going on a 7-3 run to hold the advantage for the final time.
St. Thomas pulled to within one point on three possessions close after while a 9-2 run by North Dakota State gave it a 55-46 lead with 7:03 to play.
The Tommie deficit grew to double digits two minutes later, which was brought back down to seven, 68-61, following a 9-2 run. Allen put in his fourth and final 3-pointer to begin the run while a 3-pointer from Blue put in a second chance 3-pointer to cap the run with 57 seconds to play.
NDSU converted on 5-of-6 free throws over the final minute to seal the game and take over third place in the Summit League.
Andrew Rohde scored 14 of his team-high 20 points in the second half as he finished shooting 9-of-16 from the field with five rebounds and a career high five steals. Allen followed in scoring with 14 points while Bjorklund added 12, including three 3-pointers.
The Tommies shot 35.8 percent from the field (24-67) and 26.1 percent from beyond the arc (12-46) and lost the rebound margin, 42-27. The Bison's shooting came alive in the second half as they knocked down 60.0 percent from the floor (15-25) over the final 20 minutes.
The final game of the regular season will feature St. Thomas at North Dakota Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
