Rohde scores career high 27 points as Men’s Basketball drops finale to North Dakota

Grand Forks, N.D. -- Freshman Andrew Rohde scored a career high 27 points Saturday, including 16 in the second half, as St. Thomas Men's Basketball fell to North Dakota, 82-74, in Grand Forks, N.D.
 
Rohde topped his previous career best scoring of 26 points set Feb. 18 against Western Illinois. He's now scored at least 20 points in six of his last eight games and hit the mark 10 times this season.
 
Parker Bjorklund got the Tommies going Saturday with back-to-back baskets for a quick 4-0 lead before sinking a 3-pointer for an 11-3 advantage less than four minutes into action.
 
The Fighting Hawks followed with a 14-4 run to take the lead, 17-15, as the Tommies shot 1-of-7 from the field with two turnovers during that span. The lead changed sides six times over the final 11:02 of the first half until North Dakota took a 40-38 lead into halftime behind 51.7 percent shooting.
 
Brooks Allen and Rohde scored the first St. Thomas points of the second half to tie the game, 42-42. UND hit a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession that started an 8-0 run over the next minute of game action.
 
The Tommies attacked the basket to keep within three points on multiple possessions. Rohde neared the 20-point milestone on a layup to cut the deficit to four, 62-58, with 8:08 left to play. The Fighting Hawks began to separate by hitting 3-pointers on their next four scores to lead by double digits, 74-64.
 
A 3-pointer from Rohde sparked a quick 7-2 run to bring the Tommies back within five, 76-71, which under two minutes to play. UND converted a second chance score in the paint and sank 4-of-6 free throws to close the game.
 
In addition to his game-high 27 points, Rohde added seven rebounds, a team-high four steals, and three assists. Bjorklund added 17 points with nine rebounds in 30 minutes while Ryan Dufault came off the bench to score 11 points.
 
St. Thomas shot 44.1 percent from the field (30-68), 31.8 percent from 3-point range (7-22), and 58.3 percent from the free throw line (7-12). North Dakota finished the game 51.8 percent from the floor (29-56) and 41.7 percent from the 3-point line (10-24), including seven 3-pointers made in the second half. The Fighting Hawks won the rebound margin, 40-34.
 
The Tommies finish the regular season 18-13 overall and 9-9 in the Summit. League and are locked into the No. 5 seed for the conference tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D. St. Thomas will begin the Summit League Championships Sunday, March 5 at 6 p.m. against Western Illinois.
