Swim & Dive to begin Summit League Championships Wednesday

2/20/2023 10:43:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

St. Paul, Minn. -- The St. Thomas Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving programs prepare for the Summit League Championships Feb. 22-25 hosted at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

Opening Weekend W's
Both the men's and women's programs secured wins during the season-opening weekend. The women took down Green Bay on opening day while the men beat Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D. The men added two wins after the winter break, winning duels at South Dakota and during senior day against Milwaukee.

Rudd's Awards
Sophomore Joe Rudd is a three-time honoree of the Summit League Peak Swimmer of the Week award this season. He accounted for four wins against Green Bay and Augustana to secure the first award, recorded the second fastest 100 breaststroke in program history for his second honor, and took two event wins that set program top 10 times at the JoAnn Andregg Invitational for the final one.

Among the Best in the Summit
The Tommies have five student-athletes who rank among the best in the Summit League in several events. On the women's side, sophomore Sophie Curran is second in the 50 backstroke (25.36) and senior Allison An is fourth in the 3m dive (243.05). Junior Grace Urkiel ranks fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.11), seventh in the 50 breaststroke (29.42), and ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.34). Urkiel's times in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes set new program records. Sophomore Elizabeth Bonneville will look to up her 50 freestyle (24.47) and 100 backstroke (1:00.97) times this week and could see her battle for a podium spot like she accomplished last season in the 100 freestyle where she placed sixth in the 100 freestyle (51.65).

On the men's side, Rudd is second in the 200 breaststroke (1:59.34) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (54.98), while Philip Jensen is eighth in the 50 butterfly (22.65). Rudd's times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke set new program records.
