Women's Hockey fights until the end, falls to No. 4 Minnesota 4-2
2/18/2023 11:07:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. – St. Thomas Women's Hockey concluded their regular season schedule with a hard-fought loss to WCHA championship-hopeful Minnesota, coming up short in a 4-2 effort Saturday night at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
Two Tommie seniors scored their final goal in front of a packed home crowd in Mendota Heights. Lotti Odnoga scored less than two minutes after Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Anna Solheim scored in the opening ticks of the third to cut the Gophers lead to 3-2, Nicole Vallario and Maddy Clough added assists on the play.
The Tommies pulled Alexa Dobchuk with just over two minutes to play in a last-ditch comeback effort but could not find the back of the net with the six on five advantage. Dobchuk made 55 saves between the pipes for Coach Johnson to the tune of a .932 save percentage.
St. Thomas was outshot in the contest 59-26, but with a combination of strong play in net from Dubchuk and sound defense in front (14 blocked shots), the Tommies hung with the Gophers throughout the game's entirety.
The Purple took an uncharacteristic four penalties in the game (averaged just over two per game this season) and were 1-4 on the penalty kill. Taylor Heise scored the one power play goal for either side, her second goal in as many games against St. Thomas.
Minnesota frequented the penalty box as well, making five total trips to the bin. Although the Tommies had four opportunities with a skater advantage, they came up empty, mustering four shots (one on each power play).
Up Next
The Tommies' future opponent still hangs in the balance as of the writing of this recap. St. Thomas has secured the seventh placing in the WCHA standings. They will play at the second seed for a best of three series to start the WCHA playoffs.
If Ohio State wins their 2 p.m. game tomorrow at Wisconsin in regulation or overtime, the Tommies will head across the river to Ridder Arena for the first-round playoff series against Minnesota.
If Ohio State loses that game, in regulation or overtime, the Tommies will fly down to Columbus for the second time in three weeks to square off with the Buckeyes.
