Women’s Hockey Tops Mavericks 4-1 in Hockey Hall of Fame Face-off Classic

Frank recorded 21 saves and four Tommies score to defeat Minnesota State

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. -- The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team earned their first victory against the Minnesota State Mavericks on Thursday evening. The Tommies found themselves trailing after the first period, but recorded four goals over the final 40 minutes to capture the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Face-off Classic victory.

Minnesota State opened scoring at the 7:45 mark of the first period on a breakaway opportunity, tallying the lone goal of the first 20 minutes.

During the first period of play, both the Tommies and the Mavericks were assessed minor penalties, and both squads were unsuccessful on their first period power plays.

The Tommies recorded two goals in the second frame, scored by Ellah Hause and Ella Boerger. Hause's goal was scored six minutes into the second period, assisted by Mary Zavoral.  Just three minutes later, Ella Boerger recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Tommies went into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead and shot advantage, 20 to 14.

The Tommies scored two power play goals in the final 20 minutes of play to propel the Purple to a 4-1 win over the Mavericks. Rylee Bartz and Nicole Vallario each scored for the Tommies on the power play, recording their fourth goals of the season. Ella Boerger assisted on both of tonight's power play goals, totaling a team-leading three points tonight.

Graduate Student, Calla Frank played all 60 minutes in net for the Tommies, finishing with 21 saves and a .955 SV% against her former team.

· Graduate Student, Calla Frank made 21 saves and recorded a .955 SV% against her former team.
· Ella Boeger recorded one goal and two assists, totaling three points tonight. Boerger leads the Tommies' offense with 13 points in 13 games so far this season.  
· Rylee Bartz led the Tommies with five shots on goal. Bartz also recorded a power play goal and an assist, recording two points tonight.
·Defensemen, Ellah Hause and Nicole Vallario each added a goal tonight for the Tommies.

Coach Johnson on Thursday night's win over the Mavericks: 
 
"It's a big win. Playing against a team that is receiving votes in the national polls is a big win for us. Minnesota State is a good program, we compete against teams like that every weekend in the WCHA, and it's just  fun to get the win."
 
Up Next
Next up, St. Thomas Women's Hockey faces St. Cloud State for a home and home series. The Tommies face the Huskies at home on Friday, and travel to St. Cloud on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17th, and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18th.
