Women’s Hockey faces Cornell and Harvard in D1 in DC Tournament

The Tommies play Cornell and Harvard for the first time in DC Tournament
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team travels to Washington D.C. to play Cornell and Harvard in weekend tournament. The Tommies will play Cornell on Friday, Nov. 24th at 3:00 p.m. CT and Harvard on Saturday, Nov. 25th at 12:00 p.m. CT. at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va.

Last Time Out
The St. Thomas Women's Hockey played WCHA opponent St. Cloud State in a home-and-home series. On Friday night, the Tommies fell 1-0 at Saint Thomas Ice Arena. Calla Frank made 38 saves and recorded a .974 SV% in game one of the weekend series.
It was another close match on Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn., as the Tommies fell 2-0. Goaltending continued to remain solid as Olivia King made 32 saves on 34 shots for the Purple in Saturday's game.
Scouting Cornell
The Big Red are led by Head Coach Doug Derraugh in his 17th season. Under Coach Derraugh, Cornell has made four NCAA Frozen Four Appearances.
No. 8-ranked Cornell (10-2-1) is coming off two losses against No. 9 Quinnipiac and No. 13 Princeton. Senior forward, Izzy Daniel leads the Big Red offensively with 12 goals and 19 assists in 13 games played so far this season.
Goaltender, Annelies Bergmann has played 10 games in net for Cornell, posting a 1.70 GAA and .920 SV%.
Scouting Harvard
The Harvard Crimson (1-9-1) are led by Head Coach Laura Bellamy in her first season. Previous to Harvard, Coach Bellamy spent eight seasons with Minnesota Duluth.
Senior forward, Shannon Hollands leads the Crimson in points this season, totaling six points in 11 games played.
Goaltender, Alex Pellicci has played in 10 games for Harvard, recording a 3.82 GAA and .879 SV%.
Offensive Growth
The Tommies have scored 34 goals throughout the first 15 games of the 2023-24 season, while the Purple totaled 53 through 36 games just last season.
The Purple have faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce and Lindenwood. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot non-conference opponents 171-54 and outscored opponents 23-9.
The Tommies have set a D-I era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 12 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshman Ella Boerger who has found the back of the net six times. In 13 games played, freshmen Rylee Bartz and Ella Boerger have tied the single season high in points scored with 13 a piece. The previous record was set by Maddy Clough (2022-23 season) and Abby Promersberger (2021-22 season).
Fresh Faces
Two first-years lead the Tommie offense in the first 15 games of the season. Rylee Bartz (5G, 8A, 13P) and Ella Boerger (6G, 7A, 13P) lead the Tommies in scoring in the early part of the season. Boerger has recorded three three-point games while Bartz has recorded five multi-point games.
In early October, after tallying 14 shots on goal and recording five points, Boerger earned the first WCHA honor of her career as the Rookie of the Week. On Nov. 13th Boerger earned her second conference honor, named WCHA Rookie of the Week again. That same week, Bartz was named WCHA Forward of the week after recording her first three-point game.
Bartz and Boerger lead the freshman in the WCHA in points this season.
Defensively, Ellah Hause leads the team in blocked shots, blocking 27 shots in 15 games played. Hause has also recorded three goals and one assist, tallying her first goal in first game played on Sep. 29th against Franklin Pierce.
Schedule Talk
The Tommies schedule is jam packed with tough competition, both in nonconference and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play. In total, St. Thomas will play 35 games throughout the year, including 10 home games in the first five weekends of the season.
The Tommies with be road warriors during the back half of the season, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from the comforts of Mendota Heights, Minnesota. St. Thomas will open 2024 with three consecutive road games against the Badgers and Huskies before returning home to home St. Cloud State on January 20. The Tommies with also host Minnesota-Duluth (February 9-10) and the Mavericks (February 24) in the final month of the regular season.
