Two goals in third period propel Men’s Hockey to 4-3 win; secure second consecutive CCHA sweep

11/11/2023 10:09:00 PM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies stayed locked in despite Bowling Green’s best efforts as Cooper Gay scored twice and Quinton Pepper scored the first goal of his career for the game-winner.

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (6-5-1, 4-2-0 CCHA) scored a goal with 2:17 to go in regulation to lock-up six points from CCHA opponent Bowling Green (2-8-0, 0-2-0 CCHA). The win comes as the Toms' fourth in a row (longest win-streak in program history) and gives them their first CCHA record above .500.

RECAP
St. Thomas had been on a roll in its last three games, outscoring CCHA opponents Northern Michigan and Bowling Green 14-4. The Falcons of Bowling Green were looking for their first CCHA victory and gave the Toms a fantastic test through 60 minutes at the Slater Family Ice Arena.

Shortly after killing off their first penalty of the game, St. Thomas' Cooper Gay scored the night's first goal in alley-oop style batting the puck out of the air into the net after sending it off the glass. Bowling Green answered back just four minutes later at 16:35 while on their second power play, Gay had been sent to the box for tripping. After one period the game was tied, 1-1.

It took Gay 95 seconds in the second period to score his third of the series. The score was a product of fantastic puck movement from Liam Malmquist on the blue line down to Quinton Pepper near the goal line to Cooper Gay planted in the slot with a wide-open net in front of him.

The Purple could not capitalize on one power play between Gay's second and Bowling Green's tying tally at 7:46 in the period. The Falcons added another four seconds later and took the game into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.

The beginning of the third period started with another Tommie power play chance at 1:03. The Toms placed just one shot on net in the two-minute sequence.

While back to even strength, Noah Prokop won a draw in the offensive zone to Jake Braccini. The sophomore carried the puck deep behind the goal line to draw BGSU's goaltender out of position. He then squeezed a pass through traffic to J.D. Metz next to the crease and the freshman scored the second goal of his young career to tie the game at three with nearly 17 minutes to play.

Quinton Pepper had not scored a goal in his first 47 games in purple. That changed late in a tie game tonight. Bowling Green's Christian Stoever came out of his paint to play a puck and did not account for the speed of Pepper who jumped the passing lane, turned over Stoever, and launched the game-winner into an yawning net.

Bowling Green outshot the Purple for the second night in a row, 24-20 but Jacob Sibell made the saves when he needed with 21.
