Malmquist's first career multi-goal game carries Men's Hockey to 4-1 win

11/10/2023 11:01:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Liam Malmquist scored two and Aaron Trotter stopped 42 shots in the Tommies program-best third straight victory.

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (5-5-1, 3-2-0 CCHA) put together a strong first period to beat the Bowling Green Falcons (2-7-0, 0-1-0 CCHA) by a score of 4-1. The Tommies secured their third CCHA win in a row for the first time in program history.

RECAP
Bowling Green came out to start the game firing the first ten shots of the game before the Tommies could get anything off. For the second time this season, the Purple scored the game's first goal and the team's first shot.

Matthew Gleason took advantage of a crazy bounce off the boards on the power-play to send a pass to Liam Malmquist who placed the puck into the back of a yawning net with 14:42 left in the first. The goal was Malmquist's second of the season and eighth point.

Five minutes later the Toms capitalized again with a goal from Cooper Gay, his fourth of the season. His linemate, Quinton Pepper assisted on the play.

St. Thomas' Liam Malmquist tossed in another while shorthanded in the first. The goal marked Malmquist's first multi-goal game of his career and was the Tommies third shorthanded of the season. Mack Byers against Minnesota and Lucas Wahlin a weekend ago against Northern Michigan scored the other two shorties.

It was the first time in DI program history that the Toms uncorked three goals in the opening frame.

Bowling Green answered early in the second period on the power play for their first and only score of the contest. St. Thomas' Cole Miller was issued a game misconduct that sent the Toms on a five-minute penalty kill. They successfully killed off the major and walked into the second intermission up 3-1.

The third period was scoreless until Mack Byers sauced the puck into Bowling Green's empty net late.

Aaron Trotter had his best game of the season in net for the Tommies stopping 42 of 43 shots faced for a .977 save percentage and his third win of the season.

The Tommies were outshot by the Falcons 43-23, but due to Trotter's stout play and some opportune offense, they came away with the victory.
