Men’s Hockey wins in all-around effort; take series from Lindenwood
10/21/2023 11:25:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Tommies outshot the Lions 38-16 taking their first regulation win of the season 3-1.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The St. Thomas Tommies (2-3-1) did not need a program record day shooting the puck to bring down the Lions of Lindenwood (1-3-2), all they needed was quality play up and down the line chart and that is what they got in their 3-1 victory.
RECAP
In just his second appearance for the Purple of St. Thomas, Jake Sibell did not disappoint. The junior transfer was one unlucky odd man rush away with under eight minutes to play from the first shutout of his collegiate career. He saved 15 of 16 pucks sent his way to secure his first win in a Tommie sweater.
When asked about his decision to transfer to St. Thomas before this season Sibell answered, "It was a good opportunity to come home and play in front of my family. It has been the opportunity of a lifetime to come and play with these guys, I hope to take advantage of it."
The Isanti, Minn. native has made two starts for a 1-1-0 record, 1.53 goals against average, and a .925 save percentage.
Sibell had plenty of talent playing well in front of him. The team controlled the puck for much of the game by winning 38 of 66 faceoffs and putting 38 shots on goal while allowing just 16.
They stayed out of the penalty box with just three power play opportunities given to the opposition and when forced to play on the penalty kill, they successfully killed off all three.
Two of the Tommies' three goals came in the middle frame.
Under six minutes into the second, Liam Malmquist tallied his CCHA-leading sixth assist to help Cooper Gay to his second goal and third point of the series.
The Toms were not satisfied with the one goal and sustained pressure throughout the next seven minutes until Luc Laylin finally broke through.
Laylin's goal was set up by a high hustle play from Matthew Gleason who controlled a high pass off the glass in the offensive end, curled back toward the neutral zone from the goal line and then found a streaking Luc Laylin who buried his second goal in as many games.
Lucas Wahlin's empty-net goal with 40 seconds to go sealed the deal on the Tommies first regulation win and series win of the young 2023-24 season.
