Gay and Manning score in 3-2 loss to open CCHA schedule

The Tommies scored with 2:32 to go in regulation and peppered the Beavers with five shots on goal down the stretch but could not send the equalizer through.
BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (2-4-1, 0-1-0 CCHA) dropped their conference opener 3-2 to in-state foe Bemidji State (2-3-0, CCHA 1-0-0). The Beavers took a first period lead, added on two in the second and fended off the Toms' comeback effort.
RECAP
The first 15 minutes of the CCHA season got off to a scoreless start at the Sanford Center on the shores of Lake Bemidji. The Beavers tallied 13 shots on goal and could not best St. Thomas' Aaron Trotter. It took just 38 seconds into the game's first power play for Bemidji State to take a 1-0 lead.
Coming off a three-point series against Lindenwood, Cooper Gay silenced the crowd in Bemidji with a goal 48 seconds later. Matthew Gleason and Carson Peters assisted on the sophomore's goal.
St. Thomas forced a tie into the first intermission despite trailing in shots on goal 13-3.
The shot totals in the second frame were more evenly matched (10-9 Bemidji), but the scoreboard tilted the way of BSU. Bemidji scored 4:28 into the period and then again at 11:37.
The Tommies did not allow a goal in the final frame and outshot the Beavers 11-6.
Luke Manning made things interesting in the waning moments of regulation with a goal off a pass from Cooper Gay at 17:28. Aaron Trotter was pulled from his net 58 seconds later and the Toms finished of regulation with five shots on Bemidji State's netminder, Gavin Enright, who made 10 saves in one period of relief.
Trotter stopped 26 of 29 pucks enroute to the conference loss. Bemidji State outshot St. Thomas 29-23 and won 28 of 52 faceoffs.
