Lindenwood forces Men's Hockey to an overtime tie

10/20/2023 11:42:00 PM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies outshot the visiting Lindenwood Lions 63-25, a new program history highwater mark.

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team has now played five games this season and for the third time they forced an opponent into overtime. Friday night at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena was the first time in which even overtime could not decide a winner as the Tommies (1-3-1) and Lindenwood Lions (1-2-2) remained deadlocked at four after 65 minutes of play.

RECAP
It took a Lindenwood team that came in averaging over 15 minutes of penalties to land themselves in the box for a five-minute major. Kieran Ruscheinski's hit from behind on the Tommies' Luke Manning warranted a second look from the officials who deemed it simply a major penalty and not a game misconduct.

Two minutes and twenty-three seconds into the contest the Tommies had what seemed to be a golden scoring opportunity. They fired in 13 shots on goal throughout the five-minute power play but could not best third-year goaltender Trent Burnham, a sequence that would foreshadow the events to come.

Lindenwood's goalie made 26 saves in the first period but allowed two shots to squeak by.

Cole Miller and Noah Prokop teamed up to feed Luc Laylin with under three to play. Laylin got the puck underneath the goaltender's pads and through past the goal line for his first goal of the season.

Cooper Gay then found the net a little over two minutes later to give the Toms a 2-0 lead headed into the first intermission. Liam Malmquist was credited with an assist on Gay's first of the season.

The Toms outshot the Lions 28-3 in the opening stanza.

Both teams traded two-minute minors to start the second period with neither side able to score while up a man.

Nearly ten minutes passed in the period and the Tommies were outshooting the Lions 32-5 with a two-goal lead. Lindenwood struck at the 9:58 and 10:21 marks to level the game in whiplashing fashion.

Four minutes later, Jake Braccini gave the Toms another lead with his second of the year, Cooper Gay contributed an assist.

After 40 minutes in Mendota Heights the Purple were 0-3 on the power play, 3-3 on the penalty kill, and leading 40-10 in shots on goal.

Striking quickly in the third, the Lions roared out of the locker room with an equalizing goal at 1:43. Forty-eight seconds later St. Thomas' Ryan O'Neill capitalized on their fourth power play of the game and put the Tommies ahead 4-3. Lucas Wahlin and Mason Poolman each teamed up and assisted on the play.

One more unsuccessful power play outing at 5:21 left the door open for the Lions and they capitalized with a goal in the 13th minute. St. Thomas outshot Lindenwood 7-3 in the final seven minutes but could find the game-winner.

For the third time in just five games the Tommies' transfer centerman, Noah Prokop was tasked with the opening faceoff in overtime. The Colorado native controlled the faceoff and the Toms piped five straight shots at Burnham, who stopped them all.

St. Thomas outshot Lindenwood 6-1 in the extra frame but came up empty.

Quick Hitters

  • The Tom's were successful on one of their five power play chances and killed off all four penalties.
  • It was the second two-point performance of Cooper Gay's career. He last tallied two on 11/4/22 against Minnesota State.
  • Five of six players to take a faceoff for the Tommies did so at a positive rate: Noah Prokop 14-7, Luke Manning 12-7, Mack Byers 13-9, Liam Malmquist 7-6, and J.D. Metz 1-0.
  • James Marooney and Noah Prokop each earned a +1 rating.
