ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Thomas volleyball prepares to take on Kansas City for the first time in 2023 during a mid-week match Tuesday, Oct. 17 in St. Paul, Minn.
The Tommies and Roos are scheduled for first serve at 7 p.m. from Schoenecker Arena. St. Thomas enters the match 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the Summit League while Kansas City currently sits second in the league standings with a 15-4 overall record and 6-1 mark in conference play.
Comeback Completed
Career-high efforts from sophomores Allie Kopp and Tezra Rudzitis helped propel St. Thomas volleyball to a reverse sweep Saturday, Oct. 14 against North Dakota State (28-30, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-7) in Schoenecker Arena.
Kopp led the team with a career high 33 assists while Rudzitis also led the team with a career high 16 kills. Kopp totaled 10 assists in the first set alone while Rudzitis was one of three Tommies with five block assists, helping the team tie a season high with 11 total blocks.
After set one that stretched to extra points and a set two win by the Bison to pull ahead, 2-0, the Tommies began the comeback hitting .220 in the third set with just four attack errors. St. Thomas led by as many as five points, 14-9, before NDSU tied the set at 21 apiece. The connection of Kopp and Rudzitis combined for three of the final four points to secure the set win.
Junior Libby Mattila had a hand in St. Thomas' first three points of the fourth set, including one kill, one block assist and one assist, as the Purple took another early lead. The Tommies extended the lead to 6-1 before the Bison tied the match with a 6-1 run of their own. Neither team pulled ahead by more than two points until back-to-back kills by freshman Ellie Gustafson sparked a quick 3-0 run and a 20-17 lead. Mattila accounted for back-to-back kills to set up set point, which was converted by freshman Morgan Kealy on a service ace.
St. Thomas' top two killers put the Tommies on the board first, Rudzitis with her 15th of 16 kills and Gustafson with her 13th and final kill of the day. NDSU tied the set at 2-2 and 4-4 before an 8-1 run, including five straight from the Purple, forced two Bison timeouts. Rudzitis and Wetter protected the net with back-to-back block assists while the run concluded on a block assist from Mattila and Wetter to lead, 12-5. An NDSU attack error and kill by Wetter set up the match-sealing service ace by junior Payton Willman.
Tough Night in South Dakota
Rudzitis had a strong match leading the team with nine kills and sophomore setter Keya Luta Win Hunt had a season high 13 assists as St. Thomas volleyball fell to the University of South Dakota in three sets (17-25, 19-25, 20-25) on Thursday, Oct. 12 in Vermillion, S.D.
The Coyotes started the match with a 4-0 lead until an error and kill by senior opposite hitter Claire Ricard put the Tommies on the board for a 5-2 game. USD didn't hold up and continued their lead. Sophomore Ellie Gustafson helped the Tommies go on a 4-0 run with a kill, block assist, and solo block to decrease the gap 21-15. Six total blocks from sophomore middle Megan Wetter, Ricard, Rudzitis, and Gustafson kept the Tommies in the game, but they weren't able to take over the Coyotes to open the match.
USD came out strong in the second set with a 7-2 lead, but kills by sophomore Ella Voegele and Wetter, helped the Tommies to a 7-5 score. Kills by sophomore Kaitlynn Peterson and Gustafson as well as a block by freshman Emily Clausen and Wetter gave the Tommies a 3-0 run to tighten the gap, 19-12. Another three-point run and block from Gustafson and Rudzitis showed the Tommies weren't done for a 23-19 game. Despite scoring 10 of the final 16 points, the Tommies fell short with a 25-19 loss.
The Tommies carried their offensive momentum into set three as junior outside hitter Libby Mattila achieved back-to-back-to-back kills to tie the game 5-5. A kill by sophomore outside hitter Ava Wild and service ace by junior Payton Willman put the Tommies on top 7-6 for the first time in the match. Rudzitis followed Mattila's lead, having four kills of her own, split assists by Hunt and Kealy, for a 12-10 lead. The Tommies were able to keep the lead until 18-18, with the Coyotes going on a 7-3 to finish the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Kaitlynn Peterson reached 100 kills with St. Thomas on Oct. 7 against Oral Roberts. Rudzitis is six kills shy of reaching 100 on the season, which would be her second straight year hitting triple digits.
Set Me Up
With nine matches remaining this season, freshman setter Morgan Kealy paces the Tommies with 497 assists. She ranks sixth in the Summit League in total assists and with 7.65 assists per set.
Kealy has totaled at least 40 assists in three matches this season, which rank second, third and fourth for most single-match assists during the St. Thomas Division I era.
Two Time All-Tournament Team

She recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 digs, one shy of junior Lauren Galvin's team high from the 2022 season.

The Youth Movement Continues
The 20-member Tommie squad is comprised of nine sophomores and five freshmen, to go along with two seniors and four juniors. St. Thomas has seven new student-athletes on its roster this season: Bradley transfer and outside hitter Kaitlynn Peterson (Lakeville, Minn.), UNC Greensboro transfer and defensive specialist Ella Voegele (Plymouth, Minn.), freshman right side Emily Clausen (Waukesha, Wis.), freshman outside hitter Ellie Gustafson (Monticello, Wis.), freshman setter Morgan Kealy (River Falls, Wis.), freshman middle blocker Addison Schmotzer (Madison, Wis.), and freshman outside hitter Miriam Unongo (Minneapolis, Minn.).
