Bulldogs outscore Tommies 21-0 in third quarter

DES MOINES, IOWA – The old adage is that all good things must come to an end. The University of St. Thomas football team learned that lesson in devastating fashion Saturday afternoon. Iowa certainly was not heavenly for the Tommies, as they saw the 13 game conference win streak snapped in a 52-21 loss to Drake University Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs outscored St. Thomas 21-0 in the third quarter, cementing their win and handing the Tommies their first Pioneer Football League (PFL) loss of 2023. St. Thomas is now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in PFL play.

RECAP:
Things did not get off to a great start for the Tommies. St. Thomas found itself in comeback position early, as Drake scored a touchdown on its opening offensive drive of the game to take an early 7-0 lead. By the end of the first quarter, though, the Tommies had tied things up at 7-7. After the Bulldogs scored the first touchdown of the game, St. Thomas answered by scoring one of its own, as Tak Tateoka (Waukesha, Wis. / South) found Jacob Wildermuth (Plymouth, Minn.  / Wayzata) for a nine-yard touchdown reception. Stephen Shagen (Park City, Utah / Park City) converted the extra point, making it 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter got off to a much better start for St. Thomas, as the team took a 13-7 lead on Gabe Abel's (Trenton, N.J. / Salisbury) second touchdown of 2023. However, the Tommies defense had no answer for Mitchell January. Drake's top wide receiver went atomic on the St. Thomas defense, tallying 161 receiving yards and scoring two touchdowns in the first 30 minutes of play. His first came just minutes after the Tommies earned their first lead of the ball game, as he regained a 14-13 advantage for the Bulldogs thanks to a 14-yard touchdown reception.

St. Thomas seemingly answered with a resounding special teams touchdown, as Ryan Sever (Edina, Minn. / Benilde-St. Margaret's) blocked his second punt of the game, and Lucas Torgerson (Turtle Lake, Wis. / Turtle Lake) scooped it up for a 17 yard touchdown return. Tateoka then found Andrew McElroy (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) for the two-point conversation, bolstering the Tommies lead to 21-14. Not two minutes later, January struck again, as his 68 yard touchdown reception helped Drake tie the game with 3:34 left in the first game.

The Bulldogs made a field goal in the waning seconds of the half, taking a 24-21 lead into the locker room at the half. They quickly extended it to 31-21 on the first possession of the second half. Forced to play catch up, St. Thomas sent Amari Powell (Valencia, Calif. / Chaminade College Prep) to the field, hoping his arm might spark a comeback. Unfortunately, nothing went right for the Tommies in the second half. Miscues on both offense and defense allowed Drake to extend its lead to 45-21 by the end of the third quarter. In the end, the Bulldogs would simply have more firepower than St. Thomas, as the home team would go on to win 52-21.

TOP TOMMIES

  • Tak Tateoka (Waukesha, Wis. / South) threw for 83 yards and completed seven of 15 passes in Saturday's game, while Amari Powell (Valencia, Calid. / Chaminade College Prep) threw for 47 in the second half.
  • Ryan Sever (Edina, Minn. / Benilde-St. Margaret's) blocked two punts in Saturday's loss, one of which was returned for a touchdown by Lucas Torgerson (Turtle Lake, Wis. / Turtle Lake). It marks Sever's first multi-block game of 2023.

UP NEXT
