Negaard nears career high with 17 points in loss at Denver

Denver, Colo. -- Senior Maggie Negaard started and ended hot from the floor Thursday night despite a 66-60 loss by St. Thomas Women's Basketball at Denver. Negaard led all scorers with 17 points as the Tommies fall to 5-10 overall and 0-5 in the Summit League.
 
Negaard hit a 3-pointer as part of the first five points of the game, beginning a 10-3 run for the Tommies. Sammy Opichka made the first of her three first-half 3-pointers followed by a turnaround jumper from Jordyn Glynn through the first 4:15 o the game.
 
St. Thomas took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter despite being held scoreless after Glynn's basket. The Tommies went 0-of-6 from the field to finish the quarter while the second featured five lead changes through the first five minutes of the period.
 
Four of the final five field goals of the first half came from 3-point range, including one for Denver with eight seconds to play for a 29-27 halftime lead.
 
The Purple tied the game on the first basket of the second half before regaining the lead over three minutes later. Both teams made six field goals during the third quarter, but the Tommies failed to sink a 3-pointer after knocking down five in the first half. Two 3-pointers by the Pioneers helped drive an 8-2 run and a 45-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Denver continued its run at 7-0 for a 49-44 lead before Jo Langbehn scored six straight points for St. Thomas. Her first two baskets brought the Tommies within three, but five turnovers and one missed shot allowed the Pioneers to pull away by double figures.
 
After trailing by as many as 12 with three minutes to play, Negaard caught fire with eight straight points for St. Thomas. Her back-to-back 3-pointers brought the Tommies back within four, 64-60, with 52 seconds to play. Denver scored on the ensuing possession followed by four shot misses and four offensive rebounds for St. Thomas over the final 25 seconds to end the game.
 
Negaard shot 7-of-12 from the field with three 3-pointers, three rebounds and three assists. Opichka followed with 12 points while Jordyn Lamker scored eight points with team highs and career highs of nine rebounds, four assists and four blocks.
 
The Tommies shot 40.7 percent from the field (24-59) and 30.4 percent from 3-point range (7-23) while the Pioneers shot 42.6 percent from the floor (23-54) and 41.9 percent from long range (13-31). St. Thomas won the rebound margin, 38-27, but allowed Denver to score 14 points off 13 turnovers.
 
St. Thomas wraps up its road weekend Saturday at Omaha with a 1 p.m. tip-off in Omaha, Neb.
