Tight battle, but Women's Soccer falls 2-1 to Marquette

9/8/2022 6:46:00 PM | Women's Soccer

St. Paul, Minn. -- Marquette Women's Soccer scored the tying and go-ahead goals midway through the second half and held on to score a 2-1 win over St. Thomas in Thursday's non-conference game on a warm and windy day at South Field.

The Golden Eagles (3-2-1) recorded a 3-0 win at home last season over St. Thomas. But Coach Sheila McGill's Tommies continue to show improvement in season two of Division I with another strong performance on their home field.

The Purple (3-2-1) pressured Marquette all 90 minutes but were unable to get the tying goal despite a few late rushes to the net.

Sophomore Camryn Rintoul drilled a long shot into the top left corner in the 47th minute as the Tommies took a 1-0 lead. The Toms have been leading or tied in the second half of all six games thus far in 2022.

Marquette answered with goals in the 61st and 68th minutes. The Golden Eagles had a modest 10-7 advantage in shots on goal but put the pressure on all game with an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Tommie sophomore keeper Annie Bantner made two leaping deflection saves and finished with four overall saves. Soph Lissa Mizutani contributed an assist.

Coach Sheila McGill's Comments

"For us having come into this game, if you would have said we'd be duking it out in a 2-1 game with chances in the last 10 minutes to beat Marquette, we'd be in a pretty happy place, but we're not. We're frustrated. Obviously in the moment it's easy to be frustrated. The big piece we can take away from this is that we can compete with anybody. Our team has to know that and to believe that and not get frantic in a few moments. We have to keep our composure in those moments. I think that's a great learning experience for us, especially with such a young team.

"For us it's a great step in the right direction. Knowing that we can compete with anybody and stay in the game. We put them on their heels in the last 10 minutes, so that's really positive to know that in this kind of battle we had the fight to come back."
