Goerger leads with 13 kills as Tommies drop 3-1 match at Pioneers

Denver, Colo. – Freshman Emma Goerger led St. Thomas Volleyball with 13 kills during a 3-1 loss (19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 14-25) at Denver on Thursday night. The middle blocker hit .385 and added two blocks as the Tommies fell to 2-14 overall and 0-4 in the Summit League.
Two Denver errors gave St. Thomas a quick 2-0 lead that was extended to 6-2 with a fill from sophomore Libby Mattila. The Pioneers took the lead at 11-10 and scored nine of the final 12 points to take set one.
The Tommies fought back from a 6-0 deficit early in the second set and scored six of seven points late to trail, 23-21. DU added the final two points for a set two win.
St. Thomas and Denver traded the first seven points of the third set, including two of Goerger's seven kills in the game. Three of her kills came over the final five points for St. Thomas while freshman Keya Luta Win Hunt put down her second kill of the set to win the game.
Along with her team-high 13 kills, Goerger added two blocks to reach 50 in her career. Galvin followed Goerger with eight kills to bring her to within six of 500 in her career.
Hunt led the Tommies with 14 assists while graduate student Carrie Rutledge and Eva Fitzgerald each topped double-digit digs with 12 and 10, respectively. Rutledge is 25 digs away from 500 in her career.
St. Thomas concludes its three-match road trip at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at Omaha.
