10/1/2022 3:05:00 PM | Volleyball
Omaha, Neb. – Sophomore Lauren Galvin reached the 500 career kill milestone Saturday afternoon as St. Thomas Volleyball took a 3-0 loss to Omaha in Omaha, Neb. The Tommies fall to 2-15 overall and 0-5 in the Summit League after dropping close decisions of 25-27, 24-26, 20-25.
Galvin, needing six kills before today to reach 500, hit her sixth of the day in the second set to give St. Thomas a 20-19 lead. The Mavericks (7-7, 2-2 Summit) completed back-to-back comebacks in sets one and two to hold a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Tommies led by six, 23-17, in set one before a 10-2 run for the Mavericks to steal the game. St. Thomas led by as many as four in set two and forced extra points after a block from junior Ellie Damman and freshman Tezra Rudzitis.
An Omaha attack error and an assisted block by junior Claire Ricard and freshman Emma Goerger started a 6-2 run for the Tommies late in set three, cutting a once six-point deficit to two, 22-20. Two blocks and a service ace allowed the Mavericks to complete the sweep.
Goerger and Galvin each led the team with nine kills, while Goerger added a career-high 10 blocks and Galvin chipped in eight digs. Freshman Allie Kopp recorded her third double-double of the season with 16 assists and 12 digs while graduate student Carrie Rutledge paced the Tommies with 16 digs. Rutledge is now nine digs away from 500 in her career.
St. Thomas returns home Oct. 6-8 to host South Dakota and South Dakota State. The Tommies open the weekend at 7 p.m. Thursday night with Professor Recognition Night followed by a 12 p.m. first serve Saturday on Alumni Night at Schoenecker Arena.
