Tommies take one over Coyotes as Rutledge reaches 500 career digs

St. Paul, Minn. – Graduate student Carrie Rutledge helped St. Thomas Volleyball take an early set over South Dakota on her way to her 500th career dig Thursday night at Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies (2-16, 0-6 Summit) won set one before a 3-1 loss (28-26, 18-25, 13-25, 19-25) to the Coyotes (15-2, 4-1 Summit).
Freshman Tezra Rudzitis and sophomore Lauren Galvin opened the match with a kill each to give the Tommies a quick 3-0 lead. St. Thomas held the three-point lead until South Dakota went on a 13-5 run for a 19-13 lead. Galvin kick-started a quick 4-0 run for the Tommies that extended to a 9-1 run to give the lead back to the Purple, 22-19. USD scored six of the next eight points before kills from Rudzitis and Galvin helped seal the first set in extra points, 28-26.
St. Thomas started set two with a quick lead that vanished following a 7-0 run by South Dakota. The Tommies cut the lead to two but trailed for the remainder of the set. Following the third set, St. Thomas again fought back from a five-point deficit to trail two, 17-15, in set four. The Coyotes scored six of the next seven points to take final control of the set and match.
Rutledge needed nine digs entering the match to hit the career milestone, as she hit number 500 early in set two. She finished with a team-high 22 digs and three assists. Freshman Allie Kopp paced the team with 24 assists and added 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Galvin led the team with 18 kills and a .224 hitting percentage as she added nine digs, two assists and a service ace. Rudzitis followed with 13 kills along with nine digs.
St. Thomas closes out its home weekend at 12 p.m. Saturday with its first of two season matches against South Dakota State at Schoenecker Arena.
