Volleyball falls in four sets to South Dakota State

St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas Volleyball went to four sets Saturday afternoon as South Dakota State came away with a 3-1 win (13-25, 19-25, 25-23, 13-25) at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul, Minn. Freshman Allie Kopp finished one assist shy of her career high as the Tommies move to 2-16 overall and 0-6 in the Summit League.
The Jackrabbits (9-8, 3-2 Summit) jumped out to 25-13 win in set one before the Tommies kept the second set close. St. Thomas pushed for a 7-7 tie on a kill by sophomore Libby Mattila and later stayed within two to trail, 17-15. SDSU scored six of the next eight points on their way to a second straight set win.
Freshman Tezra Rudzitis recorded the first point of the third set on a kill and later regained the lead following three straight points, 14-12. The Jackrabbits took one more lead in the set as the Tommies grabbed their final lead on a block assist from Rudzitis and junior Claire Ricard. The Purple scored eight of the final 13 points to hold off a SDSU comeback attempt.
Rudzitis again accounted for the first point of the fourth set before three straight points from SDSU. The Tommies pulled to within one points four times as the Jackrabbits ended the match with nine of the final 10 points.
Kopp totaled 28 assists to lead the Tommies and was one dig shy of a double-double. Graduate student Carrie Rutledge paced the squad with 24 digs while three Tommies totaled at least 10 kills. Rudzitis led the attackers with 13 kills, followed by sophomore Lauren Galvin with 12 and freshman Emma Goerger with 10.
St. Thomas heads back to the road Oct. 11 at Kansas City and Oct. 15 at Western Illinois for its next action.
