Volleyball to host USD Thursday and SDSU Saturday at Schoenecker

St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas Volleyball welcomes in South Dakota and South Dakota State Oct. 6 and 8 as it continues Summit League play. The Tommies will host Professor Recognition Night Thursday at 7 p.m. followed by Alumni Night Saturday at 12 p.m. at Schoenecker Arena.
The Tommie student-athletes have been asked to invite their professors to Thursday night's match against the Coyotes, who will be recognized in the digital match program.

St. Thomas was taken down during each of its three Summit League matches Sept. 27-Oct. 1. The Tommies began the week Tuesday with a 3-0 loss at Oral Roberts, took a 3-1 loss Thursday at Denver and finished with a 3-0 loss at Omaha on Saturday.
The Purple fell during its first road league match of the season to the Golden Eagles. St. Thomas led by as many as five points in set one before ORU went on to sweep the match (23-25, 15-25, 20-25).
On Thursday, the Tommies took set three against the Pioneers to avoid a sweep (19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 14-25). St. Thomas and Denver battled back-and-forth in the third set as freshman Emma Goerger added eight of her team-high 13 kills in the game.
Sophomore Lauren Galvin reached the 500-kill mark of her career during the second set Saturday at Omaha. Needing six to reach the milestone, Galvin tied for the team-high with nine kills.
Goerger led the Tommies with 28 kills and 15 blocks, including a career-high 10 blocks at Omaha. Nine came as assisted blocks while she was one kill away from her first career double-double. Goerger tallied a .273 hitting percentage with 2.80 kills per set.
Galvin finished with 23 kills and 20 digs through the week while freshman Allie Kopp led the team with 32 assists. Kopp recorded her third double-double of the season with 16 assists and 12 digs against Omaha. Graduate student Carrie Rutledge paced the squad with 41 digs and is now nine shy of 500 in her career.
The Tommies rank third in the Summit League with 1.77 opponent blocks per set, sixth with 1.95 blocks per set, and seventh with 1.38 service aces per set. Goerger ranks seventh in the league with 1.03 blocks per set, Rutledge ranks tied for seventh with 3.16 digs per set, Kopp ranks tied for ninth with 0.30 service aces per set and Galvin ranks 11th with 2.97 kills per set.

The Tommies are 0-2 against South Dakota all-time, falling in four sets (25-20, 15-25, 13-25, 23-25) during the most recent meeting Nov. 6, 2022 at home.

South Dakota is 14-2 overall and 3-1 in the Summit League after splitting its last week of matches. USD opened the week to a 3-2 loss (25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 11-25) Sept. 27 at North Dakota State, its first loss since dropping the season opener to No. 4 Louisville. The Coyotes bounced back with a 3-2 win (16-25, 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10) over South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D.
The Coyotes rank second in the Summit League with a .251 hitting percentage, a .191 opposing hitting percentage, 11.95 opponent kills per set, 2.48 blocks per set, 1.55 service aces per set, and 13.41 opponent digs per set. Junior Elizabeth Juhnke leads the country with 389.0 total points and ranks third with 5.89 points per set and 5.24 kills per set.
Scouting South Dakota State
South Dakota State begins the week 8-8 overall and 2-2 in league play following a split at North Dakota and against South Dakota. The Jackrabbits earned back-to-back wins in the Summit League with a 3-1 win (25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19) but fell in five sets to South Dakota at home (25-16, 23-25, 16-25, 25-22, 10-15).
The Jackrabbits rank third in the Summit League with 1.53 service aces per set and a .210 opposing hitting percentage. Fifth year senior Crystal Burk ranks 31st in the nation and second in the league with 4.13 kills per set.
