Zags stay one step ahead in 3-2 win over Men's Soccer
9/27/2022 6:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer
St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas Men's Soccer finished strong here Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't quite enough to catch an experienced Gonzaga team. The Bulldogs broke to leads of 2-0 and 3-1 and posted a 3-2 non-conference win on a cool, sunny day at South Field.
Sophomore Faris Colic scored his second goal of the season in the 54th minute to bring St.Thomas within 2-1. Moments after a penalty kick try by the Toms was denied by the GU keeper, freshman Carver Tierney scored in the 88th minute, his third goal of the season, to trim the deficit to 3-2.
But time ran out on the host team's comeback bid.
Gonzaga (4-6), which started eight juniors, seniors or grad students, has won three of its last four games. The Zags scored twice in a 5:10 span midway through the first half and led 2-0 at halftime. They connected on what proved to be the game winner in the 84th minute for a 3-1 lead.
The Purple (2-7-1) played its third solid game in a row, all at home, going 1-1-1 in that span.
The visitors had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks and 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Johan Garibay had two saves in net and also deflected a penalty kick shot in the 88th minute. Tucker Mann had three saves for St. Thomas.
Quote the Coach
Considering the Toms had two starters sidelined, Coach Jon Lowery was especially pleased with his team's fight and resilience against a proven program that the Toms lost to 2-0 last season.
"We were unfortunate and a little immature at moments (today), and they made us pay for it. But we went straight up with them and didn't really hide. I think we pull a lot of confidence from that. We know what we have to fix, some things we can see a bit more easily. But our possession is better than it's been, our attacking was better than it's been.
"The confidence levels are growing, you are seeing it. The guys are a month in (to the season), they have school settled, their bodies are starting to bounce back after those first few (hectic) weeks. There's a ton for us to build on. They are disappointed because their expectations are so high, but realistically that was a really strong performance."
Next Up
The Purple, 1-0 in Summit League play, travel to Tulsa for a Saturday night game at Oral Roberts.
