Tommie Volleyball drops weekend finale to North Dakota

St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas Volleyball fell to North Dakota 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 14-25) on Saturday afternoon to close out the Summit League-opening weekend. Freshman Keya Luta Win Hunt tied a career-high and led the Tommies with 16 assists at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul, Minn.
North Dakota (5-8) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set before St. Thomas (2-12) battled back to trail by one, 11-10. After trailing by one late in the set, 20-19, the Fighting Hawks went on a 5-1 run for a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Tezra Rudzitis gave St. Thomas a quick 1-0 lead in set two but later faced a five-point deficit, 18-13. The Purple again fought back to trail two, 21-19, before a 4-0 run by UND to take set two.
An error on UND and two kills from sophomore Lauren Galvin allowed St. Thomas to take a 3-1 lead in the following set. Galvin's ninth kill of the match provided the Tommies' final lead of the day, 7-6, as the Fighting Hawks closed the match on a 16-5 run.
Galvin led the Tommies with 12 kills on a .211 hitting percentage while Hunt tallied her third double-digit assist match of the season. Sophomore Ella Wheatcraft led the team with 10 digs as junior Ellie Dammann and Rudzitis led with three blocks each.
St. Thomas makes its first Summit League road appearance with a three-match road trip Sept. 27-Oct. 1. The Tommies open the week Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. against Oral Roberts followed by Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. against Denver and Saturday, Oct. 1 at 12:30 p.m. at Omaha.
